not much pwnisher. depends.
there are guys who threw much better than me that were not impressive in the gym at all, and some were monsters.
dave barron is a good example. he was a top pro on the HG circuit when I was a “super-A” amateur(basically a undeclared pro), guy was maybe a 400lb squatter, 275 clean, 350 bp, maybe. guy was FAST, pretty tall (about 6-3) and technique was beautiful.
other guys like Mike Smith were just freaky strong(he i heard was a legitimate 1000/600/700 geared powerlifter, who had pretty respectable raw numbers too) that made up for a lot of technique flaws.
i did Olympic lifting, Powerlifting, and throwing, and i think both OL and PL complimented throwing, OL more so than PL, but it was not as important as many people think.
size (good throwers are usually taller, bigger framed guys) speed, explosiveness and technique.
there is an amount of strength that needs to be achieved for optimal POTENTIAL for success in sport, but eventually you get to a point of diminishing gains as far as how much of a stud in the weight room you are will transfer to the field.
Dave Barron was a freak, i do not think the majority of people could be as successful as he was on the field while being as relatively “weak” as he was, and most do not need to be as strong as Mike Smith either.
i think that most should strive to have a 500-600 squat, 300-400lb clean, 300-400lb press, and 500-600lb pull, after that they should concentrate on just maintaining strength and making improvements in their sport by technique practice.
not sure if i answered the question…;p;
