A lot of coaches tell me, thats sports are like 90% mental. So if I want to be good a sports I should do mental training for the sport as well as physical right? I heard that Mental Training is becoming something big too, but where can I get some information to see if I want in?
A little bit of info in Coach Davies book, and also another book I have read which is good. It deals with tennis and track mostly but has other good stuff too. Its called “The New toughness training for sports” by James E. Loehr.
I think you’re going to find a lot of good resources on mental training OUTSIDE the sports realm. Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz is a good start. But your coach is right. Often success in sport is that 1% difference in performance and mental toughness that mental training makes.
What is the sport in particular? Timothy Galway (sp) wrote some great books called The inner game of golf, and same for tennis that focus on letting your instinct take over as it only takes a short time to actually learn askill and then your mind hampers you causing paralysis by anlysis. I am sure Mike Mahler wrote an article on mental toughness training that worked on pre fatigue prior to weights, similar to renegade training.
Get a book called Applied Sports Psychology. Great information on goal setting, visuallization and pretty much most other areas of mental preparation.
There are several books on mental toughness check at amazon.com and do a search. This should give you a good list. Start with Peak Performance. If you need some more titles let me know.
Best of Luck.
Great day in the morning! I’ve haven’t heard Maxwell Maltz’ name in ages! I’d guess it’d be 20-25 years since I read that - how’d you get turned on to it? What did you like/not like about it? Thanks - T.E.
Well, it’s on a book list I have for business/leadership training. I’ve made my way through most of the list. Maltz’ book is one I’ve waded through a couple times. A lot of them have a Christian bent, so some of the ones on verbal programming would probably be of less interest to this board.
