the guys on the bb.com forums make some pretty crazy claims about bcaa mega dosing, and i wanted to get some feedback on what you guys think. Since taking BCAA pre/post WO and before bed I’ve gained about 6-7 lbs (while not changing any other factors of diet/training). But, these guys are using bcaa b/w every meal too and almost everyone who joins the experiment seems to have gotten good gains too.
that being said is there any rational to this or is it a scam?
I’ve only experienced good gains from high doses of BCAAs. Mind you I only took it intra-workout, using about 40-50g’s, but I never took it before bed or anything. These were the times when I gained the most quality mass.
From my understanding, BCAAs raise insulin (along with blood AA levels), therefore you only want to use them intra-workout (or post workout).
This is something I am considering changing up myself. Currently I just have some with breakfast lunch and dinner, and whatever is in my Surge and MD peri workout. I felt it was crucial to maintaining muscle while I was losing fat.
I figure I will do something like you are describing when I get back to trying to add mass, ive always heard good things from it.

At what point is it mega-dosing?
When you exceed superdosing…

Hahah. On a serious note when I first started reading about ‘mega dosing’ BCAA’s was when Poliquin and CT would use the term referring to 40g per work out.

I noticed that there isn’t much feedback on the original question, just everyone suggesting to use leucine and why it is a good choice…
…And what might that indicate?
That theres a lot of hype about Leucine? Its great and I find it effective when used with other aminos or protein sources but for actually building muscle you have to provide more than a stimulus (leucine) you need the building blocks as well. BCAAs might not be all you need but it provides aminos that are actually part of muscle.

Or that money is probably better spent on leucine than BCAA?
I completely agree other aminos are needed, which should be assumed anyway, but there are only two BCAA’s aside from leucine.
I think it’s fairly well established the ‘good’ from BCAA’s mainly comes from it’s leucine content.
There is 9 grms of leucine and 93 grams of protein in 12 oz of steak. Money better spent on steak. Every 3 years… Supp companies rotate to the next amino acid as the new holy grail. Eat meat and get them all and tell them to STFU.
