MAG Grips (and copycats)

One gym I use recently got a full set of MAG attachments. Some time ago, a friend of mine brought his wide attachment to the gym, and after trying it I did not understand what the fuss was about, since a lot of people rave about them.

I didn’t realize they came in so many varieties. I really like the narrow supinating ones for rows and triceps. Because the biceps supinate (make your palms face upward) in addition to flexing the arms, it is an easy way to add volume to the biceps after a few more focused things. You can use more weight too, which is possibly better for the ego than the arms. People online talk about MAGs working the lats more too, but I personally don’t feel the difference much.

I decided to buy a copycat grip being sold at an attractive price during one of Amazon’s sales. The copycat feels the same as the MAG grip at the gym, but it weighs twice as much - durable, but heavy - much more of a pain to lug around even though it fits in a small gym bag.

No doubt I’m late to the party. But thought I would ask others about whether they use or like these attachments, whether they find copycats comparable, which specific ones they like best and for which exercises, whether people find them overrated, or whatever you want to say about them or other specialized handles.

No one uses these? Not surprising. Most gyms don’t have them. And a lot of “extras” turn out to be not very good.

I have built and spent money on many things. Some I still use often, many are rarely used, a few were useless wastes of money.

The best things I have bought were:

  1. 2 Long thin bands, mainly for presses
  2. Landmine handle for one hand rows
  3. Landmine attachment for home gym
  4. Trap bar
  5. Supinated close grip cable handle
  6. Squat shoes
  7. Belt
  8. Slingshot
  9. Long thick band for shoulder stretches
  10. Ab wheel

I use these grips and really like them. I am able to better align my elbows with them and do feel my lats more. I don’t notice any difference in the copycats. My favorite is the close semi-supinated one for pull downs.

The Meadows row handle is the one thing on your list I’ve used and don’t really like. It makes it a little harder to get my angle right to get a full stretch and I don’t notice any improvement in how the pull feels.

I agree, the semi-supinated ones (narrow and medium) are the most useful for hitting lats on pulldowns and rows. And they feel most different from every other handle out there.

Speaking of other cool gym stuff, I’ve been loving the EZ Curl bar lately. The semi supinated and semi reverse grip are really comfortable on curls/reverse curls.

I like the medium grip for lat pull downs. Smart design and I run out of pulling power before grip issues ever become a problem.

I have and routinely use a 12 inch MAG copycat bar used for pulldowns. A revolving straight bar tended to cause elbow inflammation when done with a supinated grip.
The MAG bar completely eliminated the inflammation and enhanced my grip
