Hip discomfort.
I found conventional DLs were wrecking my back. Actually, it was probably my stubborness and too much maxing out. Anyway, switched to sumo about a year ago and loved it. No hip issues, back felt great, numbers went up.
Switched back to conventional to get more back work and so far, so good. Numbers for sumo / conv are about the same. 5/3/1 is keeping me from maxing which is good. Sumo taught me to initiate the DL with leg drive which is something I sucked at before.
But the last week or so I’m having hip pain which is making sleep a problem. Stretching hip flexors and foam rolling. I guess I’ll just keep at it and see what happens. I may need to get into some of the Cressey info.

Isn’t sumo deadlifting kind of cheating?
Interesting about the hip pain. I don’t get pain but I do get something that feels like itching or a crawling feeling in the joint when I done a lot of squatting or pulling. I think it’s related to being tired and drives me nuts.

Why does it sometimes feel like Groundhog Day around here?

I don’t agree with the term “cheating” but it may be a stronger lift for some given their structure. The stresses on my body are different but my weights for both are about even now so I have no bragging advantage one way or the other. I’m not sure if I’m going to stick with conventional or not…depends on how my back feels.
My hip pain was from super tight hip flexors. Can’t remember which author mentioned it but the prescription was to add a minute a day to a static hip flexor stretch until you get to 20 minutes. I didn’t go that crazy but I got up daily stretches of 5 minutes per side. Made a big difference.

I liked him in Lost in Translation. Broken Flowers too.
I get to do a particularly brutal hip flexor stretch before every workout courtesy of my ART gal. It involves lifting the back knee off the ground and holding the extreme stretch for 1 minute. More if I can stand it, but I rarely can.

You know I’m just picking on him. We all know deadlifts aren’t really official unless they’re done from a deficit with a double overhand snatch grip and a small possum on your head trying to eat your eyes.
One sumo pull I posted on youtube had a clearly experienced lifter telling me my feet were too far apart. I’ve never heard that complaint from a guy but this tool box didn’t know what a sumo pull was.

Commented on the new hair color of one the regulars. Mid-40s, cute, hard trainer. Hair is now dark auburn, below shoulder length…it was a lighter brown. She immediately exclaimed “I hate it!” and said she almost cut it off. She thought it made her look old…I thought it made her look hot. Women…hard to understand sometimes but such a wonderful thing.
A great band from Newfoundland. Passionate, creative, big break coming soon.

A champion sumo puller (you) saying pulling sumo is cheating. Of course I knew you were kidding, O.
Nice lifting, Giterdone. Don’t even try to understand women. We pride ourselves on being unpredictable and mysterious.
Good looking deload. I had a conversation with a new person at teh gym too but she was about 20. Normally I only talk to the co-eds whne they do first because you don’t want to be “that guy”.

Oh yeah, “that guy”. There is a worse version than the overly friendly, chatty, gym rat.
During training today, between sets, I noticed the same woman with the hair was doing pullups and using an incline bench for assistance when needed. One of “those guys” came over and switched the bench to a flat bench…said she was doing it wrong. She just looked at me and we both gave a WTF shrug. The flat bench was fucking useless for what she was doing. He must have thought she was a damsel in distress. Dick.
Last week there was a couple of huge dudes in gym I didn’t recognize. I thought she knew one of them since they were talking between sets. Turns out they were wrestlers in town for a gig looking for a “date”. She had to tell him she was married. We had a laugh and a chat about why this happens to her now more than when she was younger. I gave her some thoughts from the male perspective.
thoughts from the male perspective… a rare species indeed ![]()

Oh hell, I work out at a college gym so I get lots of confused girls who have some fucked up body issues. I know our society had gotten fat but these girls think they are huge and disgusting meanwhile every guy in the gym is looking at them thinking “That girl is out of my league”.
Then the dickhead guys come and hit on them, and not very well either. Poor dumb bastards.

Please explain why Jake the cute 21 year old (if that) cashier at the grocery store hits on me? Is it some sort of MILF fantasy thing? I think its hysterically funny, but am perplexed.

You are fit, confident, cute bum, great legs and you probably smile at him (we really can’t resist a smile as an invitation to engage). There may a MILF thing happening but, really, there is no expiry date on hot.
And for god sakes don’t touch his arm or shoulder…basically that means you want to take him behind the baked goods and work your crazy MILF magic ![]()
