So I play line in high school. Should I really worry about being all that lean? I weigh 205 right now at 5’11". I also run a 5.32 forty yard dash. I play center. Should I get lean, or just keep eating as much as I can (healthy obviously) and just get stronger??
no, that’s pretty small for a center. what are your goals football wise? are you trying to make it to a div 1 team, if so you need to gain weight and think about moving to the outside line
I agree with robo. If you plan on staying on the line, you’ll have to get stronger and quite a bit bigger. Especially @ 5’11". I’m only about an inch taller then you, and I’ve had to pack on quite a bit of size and strength to remain competitive at the highschool, and now CIS level.
If you hope to move off the line in the future, you could probably get away with being smaller, but you’ll have to work more on speed and agility.
What year of H.S. are you in?
What’s your training program like?
also, read this article I found when I was about your age. It helped motivate and guide me where I needed to go.
your a VERY small lineman, is your team just desperate for lineman? Your size is better suited for other positions.
I’m a sophomore this year so I’ll be a junior next year. Right now I’m in track. Our track coach makes us do some unusual exercises like push press and farmer’s walk. At least something we wouldn’t do in football.
I also play middle linebacker.
My freshman year, we had about 12 kids on our team, and everyone played both ways obviously.
I’d like to play at the college level, but I realize I would have to get much bigger to even consider it.
For summer football weights, we do bench and incline 2 times per week and squat and powerclean two times a week. Wednesdays are “cardio days” where it’s mainly running, and a thing we call super circuit, where we have a certain amount of time to do auxiliary things like box jumps, curls, and other things.
I was also planning on doing Joe Defranco’s WS4SB (even though I’m not a skinnny bastard =P) while in track. Is this a good idea?
My two cents (as a former lineman):
WS4SB is great, and works great when pairing it with lots of dynamic work - what events in track do you train for?
If at all possible, get a training day in of strongman-type events. Doesn’t have to be all the events, but if you could get in a tire flip, you’d do yourself proud. Don’t overdo it, of course, but it would go nicely with WS4SB - which has a protocol that includes strongman training on DeFranco’s website.
At 5-11, I think you can manage as a center (bigger problem if you played down the line), but you definitely would want to add beef. Also, consider other positions if you think you have the skills to contribute.
Best of luck.
Just shot and disc in track. Speaking of that, got a new pr. Beat my old one by 5 feet.
So you’re saying to add even more dynamic work than he already has in his WS4SB 3 template?
i suggest getting better in track numbers dont lie on a 12 man football team no real scouts would ever come to see your team enless your playing one large ass important team and even then they would wait for them to play some one better. less comp in track to so better chance for scholarship

do what is fun man, not everyone is out for the scholarship most wont get anything and even less will get anything decent. If your not having fun in football don’t do it, seeing as how your smaller and lineman for the most part is pretty boring you would have more fun as like fullback, defense player.

No, I would stick with that - my concern that if you did WS4SB with the dynamic work in addition to your track work, you might be overdoing it.
Don’t let the WS4SB dynamic work take precedent over your sport-specific training. Let the dynamic work complement what you are doing for track.
Nice job on the PR, btw. Keep up the great work.
Alright. I’m gonna start WS4SB tomorrow. It should help out.
I dunno. I know centers can get away with being smaller, but I would try to get to 250. I know a semi-pro tackle (sometimes guard) who only weighs 240, but he can easily overpower and block 300 lb guys. It all depends on how good and how strong you are. Still, I would gain weight if I were you.
get stronger. Then get stronger. Repeat.
Obviously you are from a small school since you run a 5.32 40 and are a middle linebacker. As a center, depending on your teams philosophy-zone blocking, or pulling/trapping, you would probably need to be quick to move around and block those nose tackles. I honestly don’t see why you couldn’t improve your quickness/speed, and strength at the same time. Something like WS4SB will work great for you especially paired with track. I agree with the post that said to try to get in some Strongman type lifts.
In football and other sports where you exert a force on a moving object, you need to be able to control your opponent. That means when your in the weight room your moving the bar explosively and in control, when your doing a tire flip or a keg toss, your exerting all of your force on that implement.
Also, what do you do in the winter? Where I am from we do football in the fall and track in the spring. A lot of what happens in wrestling correlates well to football. Being able to control your opponent, being quick and strong. I disagree entirely with the posts that encouraged you to become a fatass at 240-250. On your 5’11" frame you would probably end up in the 20’s or even 30’s in terms of bodyfat.
I played Center and Defensive End on a team that made it to state in football. I graduated with 60 people to give you an idea how big our school is. I was 6’0 tall and weighed about 205 while running a 4.9 40 yd. Be quick, Be athletic. Dont get fat. I have never seen a coach that says damn that center of ours is just too quick, he need to get fatter and slower in order to block. Good luck, you are on the right track.
Thanks for the good advice guys.
Got in the first workout. Showed how much of a slacker I was being for a while. Benched 205 for 3 solid reps. Rear delt flyes are hard as shit. Made me feel so weak. I’m assuming that means my upper back is weak.
Along with working up to 205 for 3 reps on the bench, I did some bent over rows, DB bench press, rear delt flyes, and bicep curls, as per WS4SB3. Felt like a good workout. And my dad even helped spot =D.
I guess I’ll sort of turn this into a log as I go along. Might be a little easier.
Good stuff - keep us posted on your progress.

Please tell that to our coach. Seriously. I swear. The only people they want are the big fat guys. There is a right tackle that went up from freshman to varsity (the best players get to move up after the season is over for fresman), but yet there are people more explosive, better blockers, and think and react better. Our high school team has the biggest lineman, which isnt all that bad, but too many of them are actually slow.
But I do agree. Strength and being able to apply that strength is the most important part.
I know where you are coming from, I graduated with 63 other people. We also didn’t have a football team at our high school until I was in 8th grade, but I had been playing the equivalent of Pop Warner growing up. The thing you need to remember is that in order to be a better football player, you can’t just get stronger or get leaner. Don’t listen to the people that say that scouts don’t come to see players at small schools. If you can play, a scout will come watch you. In my four years of high school football, we had 9 players go on to play college football, ranging from a Division 1 running back to a Division 3 punter.
As far as your question goes, you need to do both. A 5.32 forty and a 205 bench for a triple aren’t very good numbers. I don’t like to say these kinds of things, because football is more than just numbers, but you need to get faster and stronger. If you work hard, you have no choice but to do both, and considering you’re around 15-16 and probably don’t have a whole lot of lifting experience, it IS possible to do both. You’re definately heading in the right direction though and I wish you the best of luck. I’ll always root for the guys from small schools.
ask your coach.
Talk to Joe Defranco
I don’t need to do any extra sprinting work to get stronger do I?
Today in track practice, we’ll be doing the decathlon, which consists of 10 events, basically all but the pole vault. We’ll be doing 4 today and 6 on thursday. It’s always pretty fun to see guys who have never high jumped or touched a shot put in their life actually get in there and do it. Should be fun.
