Just turned 50 and had second shoulder reconstruction in two years (right and left). Ortho told me last week that if I keep it up, the only thing to look forward to would be hernias and hemorrhoids. Any experience or advice to share?
Thx
What is your program that would expose you to hernias and hemorrhoids? I have not had hemorrhoids, but I currently have a belly-button hernia. Are you squatting heavy? Deadlifting? Not that these are horrible, but you might be trying to do more than you are structured for? The great thing about getting older is, when we hit the gym, we think we are younger. What lifts were you doing that rolled you in to have shoulder reconstruction? I believe there are folks here who can help you, but you cannot be vague, nor can you ignore what your ortho is telling you. List your sessions/exercises and let those more informed than myself see if they can give you good suggestions. Good luck!
Does the ortho lift???
Hernias and hemorrhoids mostly come from big ROM lifts like deep squatting or standing overhead pressing. And dumb stuff like sitting on the toilet too long or slacking on your ab work and upper back strength and ability to extend.
The shoulder issues show that your pressing and upper body work needs some adjustment. Maybe different lifts or hand positions or set/rep schemes. And probably some focused upper back stability/chest flexibility work.
So think about your training. Is it “working”? Or is it just busting you up? Do you see room for adjustment? Do you want to make changes? Or is it “I do this in the gym and I’m not interested in anything else?”
Single data point here, but I am in my 60s and have had neither, ever from heavy lifting.
When he said keep it up what did he mean exactly? Was he referring to your working out? Suggesting you should stop
that is not good advice in my opinion. Do not stop. Just maybe change some things up a little bit if you’re injuring yourself.
I am also 50. I work out 13 days out of a two-week cycle. Only one day do I truly take the whole day off. I do a lot of heavy weightlifting. I do a lot of running. I don’t believe age is a factor in this.
Second data point here, I am 57 and have had neither, ever from heavy lifting.
Find a different ortho.
Like a couple before me I have been lifting heavy for a VERY long time, 58 now, and have never had a hernia or hemorrhoids. I will admit to a bad low back from an old football injury and the occasional cranky shoulder…
