Liddell Out of UFC 85

First Shogun, now Liddell drops out of the main event slot of UFC 85.

Liddell has a pretty significant hamstring injury (there’s a pic of this either on Sherdog or MMA Weekly) and has withdrawn from the fight against Rashad Evans.

Early speculation is James Irvin will be asked to take the fight, seeing as how he worked all of 8 seconds in his KO win over Houston Alexander a few weeks ago.

Still, that leavs the show without a true main event. Is it too late to possibly move Machida-Ortiz or Jardine-Silva to this show and make it the main event instead of being on the undercard of Sherk-Penn?

Pretty sure this will be another UFC I don’t plan on buying, unless something amazing happens. Dana’s going to have to work his magic on this one.

(Slight hijack: Did anyone happen to read the article in Cigar Aficionado on MMA/interview with Dana White? He was referred to as “former pro boxer” at least 50 times.)

The UFC site has a picture of the injury, and it looks pretty nasty.

I had next-to-no interest in this card before the injury, and now I have no interest. UFC hasn’t indicated whether or not this is a Spike card or PPV. Either way I know I’m not paying for it, that’s for sure.

For as much shit as Dana and Joe Silva get, no one envies their position when a situation like this has to be sorted out. Moving a fight like Ortiz/Lyoto or Wanderlei/Jardine is just going to compound the situation by pissing of the 15,000 people who bought tickets to go see either of those cards.

To my knowledge Dana never turned pro, but was a damn fine amatuer boxer.

If they take one of the good fights off the UFC 84 card and put in on 85 I’ll be pissed. That would be REALLY lame. Like I’ve been saying for a while, the UFC has SO many top-notch fighters and uses them SO infrequently it’s a damn shame. I’ve got to imagine there are plenty of main-event-worthy guys out there who could be ready in time for 85.

It’s a damn shame the Rampage/Griffin fight isn’t even until fucking JULY. When is the last time Rampage fought? TEN months earlier?? And he’s the current champion!

Fucking ridiculous.

Forrest Griffin had shoulder surgery and Ramapge shattered his right hand on Hendo’s head. They were both of the shelf for almost a year with surgery and recovery so they made the best of a bad situation in having two top fighters sidelined. Both were only able to start training hard again recently.

Name me a top notch LHW without a fight signed to be ready for this fight who isn’t being considered, I don’t know of any.

Who said it had to be a LHW?

I know the fans that bought tickets for 84 would be mad if one of those fights were moved, but that’s still a deep card (Soko’s fighting on the non-televised portion) even if you take one of those fights away.

The fans that have already bought tickets for the London event have got to be really mad, and do deserve a main event-caliber fight.

I like Irvin but he’s not a headliner at this stage of the game.

I’m sure Dana and co. will come up with something that appeases the masses.

Dammit, ill will was going to be the first card I was buying since the gsp-hughes/lidell-silva fight. I’ll still buy it even if they move somehting since sherk-penn will probably be worth the 45$ on its own, but dang, I wanna see machida beat ortiz’s pumpkin-head all over teh octagon.

You guys dont think werdum-vera is going to be main event worthy? Wouldnt the winner basically be the derfault #1 contender? Werdum-gonzaga was a good fight (i thought) and vera’s always exciting, it woudl be interesting to see how he would do against a guy who will actually fight, like Nog, instead of a pituitary freak like sylvia who can jab, lay n pray and frstrate his way to victory.

EDIT to add: scheduling a card is kind of like catching lightening in a bottle anyway. That fight night last month was one of, if not the, best card I’ve ever seen, and ufc didnt even think it was good enough to put on ppv. Speaking of that card, Matt Hamill’s fight got stopped less than a minute and ahalf into the 2nd. Definitely more work than irvin’s 8 sec KO, but hamill’s only “loss” was that bullcrap to bisping, hmmmm. I still think they could do somehting with that lw division like i posted about in the ufc 83 thread

injury

At least Chuck covered up his junk with his hand so we didn’t get a spread eagle shot.

That doesn’t look like it hurts too much.

thats fuckin gross. how long does something like that take to recover?

Holy shit. I didn’t know the effects of a torn hamstring could be seen like that through the skin.

I have seen it before but that is about the worst I have ever seen. I’ll bet you could stick your finger in and feel that tear.

How did he tear it? I apologize if someone already said it.

Eight years and counting.

With that much blood at the surface, it looks like he ripped the bicep femoris (larger muscle of the hamstring) right off the bone, or in the middle. If thats correct, he is looking at surgery and intensive rehab.
