What a disaster. Wonder who Hughes fights.

Nobody.
They’ll probably bump him off the card in the hopes of getting Hughes versus Serra onto 80 or 81.
Herniated discs demonstrating a move after he was finished training… Wow, what unfortunate luck.
inserts audio clip of Dana White calling Pride titles bullshit because they were defended once a year or so
Shitty, shitty luck. They have a real bottle neck going in that weight class. They needed this fight to get Matt Serra the fuck out of the picture.

They have a bottleneck in every weight class except middleweight
LW: Sherk is still on suspension
WW: Serra is injured
LHW: Rampage is being held out so he can coach on TUF
HW: Randy has ‘resigned’
The UFC belts are a fricken mess right now.
They need to stop worrying quite so much about the marketing and get some friggin’ fights going.
WWE just had a 2 month long “secret” campaign hyping the return of Chris Jericho. They flashed (easily deciphered) messages in code on all their shows which ultimately translated into : “Save_Us.Y2j”. Y2J being Jericho’s nickname.
In that vein, may I suggest:
Save_Us_BJ
Save_Us_Wanderlei
Save_Us_GSP
Save_Us_Min0taur0
We know the Emelianenkos are out and Crocop has been replaced by a body snatcher, but there is good news on the horizon, including Lesnar’s debut. If they match him up against the right tomato cans, he can build a lot of hype quickly.
Tito Ortiz can generate publicity and excitement. Give him a feud. What about Tito vs Chute Boxe? He can brag about beating Silva, and say they’re all overrated, they can’t even beat Forrest Griffin, etc. He can challenge Rua and the Silvas.
And what about good ol’ Bob Sapp? He’d be good for a quick 2-3 fight contract. Of course he’d have to pass drug tests…

Agree on Lesnar.
Tito is off filming ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ with the Donald. He also has some injury problems. Tito will not be in the octagon anytime soon.
Sapp is too big. The UFC doesn’t have a SHW division and the HW weight limit is 265 pounds. Sapp is nearly 100 pounds over the limit, so he won’t be fighting in the UFC anytime in the foreseeable future.
Lesnar is going against Frank Mir in his first fight. We’ll have to see which Mir shows up in that fight.
That’s too bad, as the build for this fight was months in the making. You never know, too, with a herniated disk how long it will be before Serra’s ready to fight again. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

I agree. In the likelihood that Hughes doesn’t fight anyone, they need to bring in a couple of reasonably high profile gamers, who aren’t scared of scrapping on short notice and potentially putting a blip on their record.
From wrestlingobserver.com:
Here is the update on the Matt Serra-Matt Hughes situation. I’ve got an article on it already up on yahoo.com in the MMA section, but the short form is this:
Serra was injured Monday training with Matt Arroyo and his back went out. It was serious to the point he had to practically be carried to the hospital. And after an MRI, he had to practically be carried off the table. He didn’t tell anyone about it, hoping it would heal. He went to the chiropractor to see if he could make it better, and ended up hurting even worse. The doctors told him there was no way he could fight on Dec. 29, so he canceled yesterday.
Matt Hughes was told this morning and naturally noted he had three bulging discs when he fought Royce Gracie. But said he believes Serra is really hurt. Hughes was offered a new opponent on Dec. 29 but didn’t have a yes or no answer. It really depends on how soon Serra can fight. If Serra can come back by March, one would presume Hughes wouldn’t fight on this show. If it’s longer, UFC may have to do something with the title, and in that case, Hughes would fight someone new.
Jon Fitch is the first person in line, and Thiago Alves may be second if Fitch doesn’t take it and they need an opponent. Having Hughes fight now in an interim title match will save April in Montreal against Georges St. Pierre, but it may be too early to strip Serra. Serra’s doctors haven’t even given him an estimate of when he’ll be ready.
They are hoping for an estimate by the weekend, and at that point, Hughes and UFC will have to make their decisions. Everything will be decided within a few days, but right now, it’s all on hold.
This is bloody crap. This is what they get for not making Serra defend his belt in seven months.
The people I feel most sorry for are Hughes, GSP and Fitch.
The picture at 170 is horrible in the UFC. There are so many guys that are basically #1 contenders and not enough fights. GSP, fitch, Karo. Anyone of them fighting and losing drops them all the way down the ladder. These guys should be fighting almost back to back for title shots. No more Hughs/GSP/Serra Merry-go-round for title fights.
Also Rampage isn’t out waiting to film TUF. He has had a bad/broken hand for a long time. He fought Henderson with it busted up. He is taking time off to heal his hand. Also the rumor is he will film TUF while he takes this time off. I would guess that if Wand wins his fight with lidell that they will be the coaches of TUF 7. Rampage isn’t rumored to be back till around June/July I believe.

So that leaves Anderson Silva to carry the UFC.

They’ve needed to do this for years. The insane growth in popularity was trendy at best. Real fans: participants of the sports involved, fans of the old UFC competitions, most of asia etc want to see fights, not hype.
When the hype is over and the yuppies at Jeff’s Sports Bar find another trend to one up each other on the learning curve with, the UFC will not be much of anything and will have lost interest in it’s original fan base.

Thanks.
