It’s incredible the kind of looks you get when you go A2G. Most people realize the looks you get just from doing squats, but back in my college gym I’d be doing A2G with something fairly light when I first started (about 245ish,) and guys were just staring at me from their flat-benches like I was some sort of freak or idiot. I mean, training legs is for chumps afterall.
The best motivation is to get a hot chick to lie under you when you’re squatting. If you squat low enough, she licks your balls. The only risk there is potential over training.
This is where holds at the bottom portion of the squat are useful. Also called paused squats.
1)wearing a belt for every set will limit your squat. If your back never is given all the stimulus it won’t be able to keep up with your squatting poundages. Most people can leg press a million pounds, It is you back that limits Your strength. LOSE THE BELT TILL A MAX!
A2G squatting is beneficial, but if you never plan on entering a powerlifting competition it isn’t a true necessity. Slightly below parallel will be sufficient. Going A2G will put tremendous stress on your joints and bone structure. Most PL’s have ligiment and joint problems for a reason. Decide what your goals are and approach training accordingly.

I dont want to get technical here, but you can still get plenty of lower back work while using a belt when you squat. I put a belt on at 135-225lbs and my lower back is far from being my weak point.
Back is not most peoples weakness in squat…considering most people deadlift more than they squat. And that most people close to stiff leg when they get into heavy weight. I would say lower back is one of the stronger muscles for most people.
Also, being able to leg press allot, but not squat allot, doesn’t mean your back is the weakness. That would never be my first thought as to why someone could leg press allot but not squat allot.
And why would powerlifters train their ATG squat? Its not necessary for anyone except olympic lifters. Most powerlifters dont squat ATG, so saying they have joint problems from that would be wrong. And saying ATG squats put any more pressure on your joints/bone structure would be wrong as well.

Pause squats anyone?
Yes, but would you stop, or keep going until every muscle in the area was destroyed?

Yeah dude. It’d be a new intensity technique. You squat down for as long as you possibly can, and then go up, and that’s a rep. You’d have to use lighter weight, though. The Hungarian Oak Blast suck one compared to the Blowjob Pause Squat (BPS.)
Squats are the only exercise that people make all kinds of reasons not to go full range. When it’s time to bench and curl trainees give it all they got but a2g squats…not so much.
I have heard people complain about sore elbows, shoulders wrist, etc., but that never stops them from benching or curling with a full ROM. Just my observation.

Well, box squatting is the superior way to train the squat.

Cause all powerlifters have huge and defined quads…

I’ve seen that too. What’s up with that? People skimping on the exercise that’ll most likely give them the best gains.
And then there’s the people who avoid the dead lift like the plague.

i was speaking of trainees that avoid squats all together…sorry i wasn’t clearer.
It’s all related. People don’t squat full rom or at all or DL because it’s hard work. Gut wrenching at times. So their lifts suck and they lie about it.
There are also many people that have done the work and wouldn’t lie even if they hadn’t.
Well, I do not squat full ROM right now (possibly never again) because of an injury. And because I have since learned from CT that some people are not built to squat ATG. I plan to consult a coach for advice in the near future, and I wish I had done previously rather than being determined to squat ATG because anything less was considered wimpy around here.
I also would like to know EXACTLY what one gets from squatting ATG versus to parallel versus partials. I assume that more fibers are recruited in the larger ROM. I’m guessing that the benefits vary with different body types (as CT stated). I’m also guessing that there might be diminishing returns with increasing ROM below parallel, but I’d be interested to hear experience to the contrary.
I’ve often read people advocating ATG, that anything less is pathetic, but I cannot remember anyone explaining WHY ATG is so much better.

I love T-Nation but if you went by nothing but the posts on here and the critiques people have on each other you’d HAVE to assume the following:
EVERYONE IS RIPPED
HAS WON A BB CONTEST
HAS A PHD IN SOMETHING
NEVER CHEATS ON THEIR DIET,EVER
HAS 20’ ARMS AND A BARREL CHEST
SQUATS OVER 350 FOR REPS
BENCHES OVER 315 FOR REPS
DOES MEGA CARDIO ALL THE TIME
IS CLEAN AND ALL NATURAL
HAS WOMEN CHASING THEM, RIGHT NOW
NEVER,EVER MADE A MISTAKE
CAN DO 20 PULL-UPS NON-STOP
I know it’s the net, but get real folks. Liar, Liar!
Here’s some honesty. If you want I’ll post some pics. One is up on my profile of my back. I makes me wonder how many people think I’m full of BS.
I’m not ripped just a real %10 with defined abs.
Never competed but will
Just a high school diploma
I only cheat once a week and with good food.
18" arms pumped
I’ve squatted more 405 for 9 reps
I can bench 315 for reps. Best was 13 or 14 reps.
I only walk on the treadmill at 3mph but up to 2 hr sessions a day when cutting.
I’m not natty anymore
I haven’t gotten laid in over a year. Women aren’t into me:(
Made too many mistakes
I’ve done 33 pull ups non stop before. A few days ago I did 14 reps with a 45 lb plate on a belt.

Sure but I don’t think I’m that great. I know guys that make me look like a weakling except I can do more pulls than them:^). My point is those standards aren’t that high. They are realistically attainable without the use of drugs provided you have decent genetics. I can do that cause I rarely miss meals and training sessions.
I also know other people that far surpass those standards. Some guys have huge lats yet they can only do 6 or 7 pull ups so when someone comes along and says I can do 30 pull ups, some guys say bs. I’m proud that I’ve reached those goals cause it required discipline and hard work. I don’t want people thinking I’m full shit.
I’ll have to set up a tripod in the gym and video me doing some of this shit.
