Lewhitehurst, What's Your Story?
its_just_me wrote:
Hi Lew - as far as I remember from EDT, Staley liked to pick loads that were 10RM’s, and do 5 reps with it. Alternating two exercises over 10 mins, and as soon as total reps got to 25% more, increase load. So fatigue accumulated over the working sets rather than there just being a few warmups sets and one or two sets to failure.

Do you follow this? Or is it just the general philosophy of density training/pairing exercises?
I do a couple warm up sets, usually just to get me fired up and focused. But then I go into my working sets. I know Staley does the 10RM and then takes 50% of the weight, but I worry about what I can hit in the 3 to 5 rep range and just bust ass to get as many sets of those in as I can. I generally do sets of 3 when I start off at a new weight and figured when I can do the same amount of sets for 4 reps, it’s time to bump up the weight. And I also do shorter time periods, because I am doing more than 50% of my 10RM.

Lew,

You won’t consider a strongman competition or something? Would training/schedule be the bigger issue or injury risk or both?
I was considering strongman last year. Actually contacted Andy Deck and found out their training schedule, but spending time with my son had to take precedence. If I can work it in, I would definitely love to, just to see what I can do. And yes, possible injury is an issue, but not as much as the time I would need to dedicate to training.

I agree and respect you for placing your family ahead of your desire to compete in strongman comps. I am not implying anything negative about the people who compete in any sport as an adult, but to be the best, something or someone is going to take a backseat.

I remember this guy in college who pressed 405 for 15 reps. He weighed about 300…a LEAN 300 at about 6’5". I expected to see that guy in the NFL or on a bodybuilding stage (he competed one semester in a bodybuilding contest my freshman year). I never heard of him again. Bottom line, yeah, there are some strong mutherfuckers out there who you won’t hear about on the news or see on youtube.

To believe otherwise would be to believe that no regular guy on the streets of Harlem could ever play basketball as well as Michael Jordan…simply because you never heard of them.

Guys, who cares. REALLY! Lew is a huge guy, and I’d believe it, simply because he says so. I give people the benefit of the doubt (unless their avatar just looks too pussy), and if someone says that he/she can lift X amount of weight, I just take it at face value. If Lew were lying, then who cares. It’s not worth getting upset over, and if anything, he’d have to put his head down at night knowing that day he spent time trying to convince a bunch of dudes that he’s strong. I’m sure those types exist on T Nation, but Lew doesn’t strike me as that kind of a guy. Of course people lie about their lifts, but I’m not going to be overly skeptical and say something isn’t possible b/c it seems unattainable to me. If a forum is created to ask someone what they do/how they do it, people shouldn’t bash the person’s posts.

Lew, thanks for the info, and keep us posted. You’re a huge guy, so I believe your lifts FWIW

Lew, I’m a big fan of Baltimore Ravens Fullback Le’Ron Mcclain. I think fullback is a very underrated position in football. Just curious what you thought of playing it, how big you were while playing, and what some of the training you might have done for that specific position.

^^im confused by this part.

It seems like you are saying that there are regular guys on the streets of harlem that could play basketball as well as Michael Jordan?

The PL gym I went to before it closed down had a couple ‘impossibly strong’ dudes. Big as fuck routinely benching in the 4’s for reps. I picked their brains whenever I saw them.

I give big guys like them and lew a huge swath of respect for claims (for lack of a better word) they make. It makes no difference to me because clearly it’s working-- why would I doubt otherwise-- lew is fucking huge.

I think the point most should take away from this thread is that Mr. Mo’ Bitchez ain’t doing “The Bodybuilding Bible” or the typical “3x10” but rather is doing something that works for him and obviously eats to support the growth.

I could see someone at 160 posting what he’s posted for workouts getting flamed. I’ve found over the past year that, at least for pressing, my ‘sweet spot’ is a couple/few tops sets in the 3-6 range so I’m really interested in hearing what this dude has to say.

If Mr. Mo’ Bitchez says he presses 495x10 I’m not sure I see the problem. When I do Incline presses, I always use a 2-board or half foam (same thickness) just for the comfort factor. I row 6 plates per side (reps) on HS iso and low rows, do I have to post vid? I’m sure i’d get flamed for ‘form’ or something.

Am I allowed to claim that I ‘incline press’ or do I have to fucking qualify every goddammed thing to the millimeter and 4 decimal places and 4 adjectives?

excellent idea.

speaking of which, you’re looking pretty hardcorez in YOUR avatar.

idiot. jesus.

then you tell people you do a ‘2-board ____lb incline press’

like you just did.

WHAT IS SO HARD ABOUT THAT CONCEPT!?

What if I don’t lock out each rep? Is it still ‘legal’?

If I say “I 2-board incline press __ x 10” but I’m 3 inches from lock out, did I still do it? Do I have to say “I 2-standard 2” board incline (note actual angle) press __ x 10 but don’t lock out by 3.5 inches"

Sorry, guess what-- I “incline press __ x 10.”

In that video posted above, did “Big Kevin” bench 420 for reps or didn’t it really happen because he didn’t lock out?

If I’m benching and I hit 365x10 but 3 reps didn’t touch my chest by some inches, did I do it? Does anyone outside of a PL comp give a rat’s ass at that level of detail? I mean we’re not talking about 3 inch partial presses from lockout…
SteelyD wrote:
Exactly. That guy hit that weight 22 times in a row. He isn’t at a powerlifting meet. If he got on line and said, “I can bench 420 22 times”, some of you would really say he didn’t do it because they weren’t perfect reps?
