you say you do 10-15 sets of 3-5 reps. Is that all on one exercise? How many exercises for that muscle group will you do after that if so?
Yep. All one exercise. Without really realizing it I was doing a combo of what CT recommends along with EDT. All I was trying to do was figure out a way to lift as heavy as I could in the shortest amount of time.

I always work the larger muscle groups first and then I would isolate my smaller muscles either after that or even do them in another session, either later that day or on another day. For me it’s always been about doing the most amount of work in the shortest amount of time without overdoing it.
Makes sense. Obviously works for you too.

Now, would you switch up what workout you hit each week for a particular large muscle group? Say, something like 10-15 sets of 3-5 reps of bench one week, and then the next week do the same with incline bench?
I try to switch up exercises in that same week, just to stimulate it a little differently. So say I do French presses for tris, the next time I hit them that week I may do dips.

For bench, since you mentioned it, all I have ever done for years is incline, with the occasional flye or dumbbell incline press. I have always hated the way flat bench felt and I prefer incline. About the time that I solely started doing incline bench I read somewhere that Kevin Levrone (I believe) only did incline bench and there were a couple others that only did incline, too.

Did I remember correctly that you lift at your house?
If you do do you find it harder to concentrate while training at yout house instead of at the gym? If so do you have tips or a routine to get into the zone when training there?
Yes. I have worked out at home for the past 6 or 7 years. I have a barbell, a couple dumbbells, a curl bar, Powertec multistation gym and about 1500 lbs of weights I believe.

Working out at home it is much easier to focus. No distractions of idiots trying to pickup women or hogging equipment or trying to look cool on their cellphones. Plus, I am not a very nice person when I am working out. I am not mean, but I am deadly serious and focused and if you get in my way and are goofing off I will tell you to use the equipment or move, period.

I throw the occasional Latina in the mix. Gotta mix it up.

Quick question when you do that one exercise are you ramping up every set or do you ramp until you get to a certain weight then just keep doing sets with that same weight?

How do you feel about cardio? Do you even bother doing it nowadays?

You should always do cardio, IMO, for the health benefits as well as it helps you with body composition in my case. Putting on size and weight has never been an issue for me, but it can get away from me if I don’t watch it. I hate jogging/treadmill, plus my knees and shins can’t take the beating at my present weight, so I do stuff like kettlebell swings/snatches, jump rope, hill sprints and conditioning with sandbags. I also have a sled I break out when it gets warmer to pull.

Lew’s voracious appetite for Sweet, Sweet Vanilla rivals mine. I think based on my travels up and down the east coast we must be Eskimo Brothers a couple times over. That being said, he is a class act and a GREAT addition to the Black Justice League.

Now a quick question, what do you do for you traps and shoulders?

Edit

Holy crap, I just realized he is a '09er. That speaks volumes to his character because we all know '09 was a SHITTY class. There are probably only 4 quality posters from that year.

Get to that weight and stay there throughout all sets

LOL. SO I guess I am an anomaly, huh?

For shoulders, all I have ever really done was presses and lat raises and Arnold presses. But now, my shoulders are starting to hurt from the heavy overhead presses so I am going to up the volume on the lat raises and Arnold presses to see how they feel and what they do.

My traps have always grown from deads, but they were always there; even when I was a little kid. Occasionally I feel guilty and do some shrugs, but then I think, “Why am I doing these and I don’t really have to?”

Good stuff.

So, what’s the bigger picture here? Short term goals, long term goals, anything that you’re tryna reach numbers wise?

EDIT: Double post, sorry, forgot to drink my tiger blood this morning.

What is left of the 09 class is strong. Pootie you cant handle us. I only have Hornitos in the house, all out of Modello.

Yeah, yeah, lift heavy, eat big, blah, blah, blah.

Now, let’s talk about how you score wit’ teh chix.

Short term is to work on mobility and athleticism and get leaner while maintaining as much mass as possible. I keep getting asked to train people, so I figure to get my personal training cert and see what I can do. If I want to do that, having as close to the total package as possible, obviously helps me. If I can help people and get paid, why not?

Long term goal is to get as close to see just how big I can get while retaining my athletic qualities. Right now, I am about 280, but I know there is a lot of bodyfat I need to drop. Especially since I store pretty much all of mine on my belly and lower back.

What are your best gym lifts?

Ever considered competing (BB/PL… If I remember right you are/were very strong) ?

Could you explain your favorite method of gaining strength in a bit more detail, post a workout or something along those lines? do you do the same thing for skullcrushers that you do for inclines?

On a different note, where do your shoulders hurt? Perhaps BBB and co can help you…

lol, after reading 5/3/1 I automatically assume BBB means Boring But Big…

If by best lifts, you mean a one rep max, I have no clue. I could never really see the purpose in seeing what’s the most I could lift once. I’m more interested in what I can move several times.

I’ve been asked about BB/PL many times, but I know I lack the discipline for BB and given my life situation, right now, PL really isn’t a good fit; but who knows? I was actually leaning towards starting strongman training/competition, but I have too many other obligations right now.

Truthfully, I have never really thought through my favorite method of gaining strength. Like I said, for me, it’s always been about getting the greatest amount of work done in the shortest amount of time. Get in and get out. In order to do that you automatically start putting time limits on things as well as pairing antagonistic muscles, learning to stimulate and not annihilate and making sure you hit the compound lifts before you worry about isolation work. Basically, anything that falls within those parameters has always worked best for me. I have always felt that you shouldn’t just look strong, but you should be strong as well.

I am thinking that the shoulder issues may be more due to me jumping up in weight too quickly on my overhead presses and maybe needing to back off. I was unable to do anything between April and September due to an elbow injury and the shoulder issues have started to pop up as I increased my weight, so I may need to slow it down. But I will pay closer attention to where and how I feel the pain, because any help anyone could provide is definitely appreciated.
Of course. This is the bodybuilding forum after all… I’m still curious, but I understand if you do not wish to post numbers.

Is it a localized pain in front? Back? Dull ache? Sharp?
Your overhead pressing technique may be the issue, or lack of rear delt and upper back work (I remember you posted before that you mostly did pull-ups and deads for your back I think).

Or perhaps it’s just too much volume with heavy weight… I personally only work up to one top set on overhead work usually… Don’t even use DC rest-pause for it anymore… I’m fine with one heavy set, but add another and my shoulders begin to ache…
Not sure why exactly.

Anyway, make post about this with some more info in the injury forum.

Just an idea, but do you have tight lats? I get pain in my left shoulder now if i don’t thoroughly foam roll and stretch my lats after pressing overhead (and obviously after back work). It’s a not-obvious culprit i didn’t pick up on for some time
