Left On Broadway

I still think bed in the living room is a great idea. you wont convince me otherwise.

what do we really get accomplished now anyway when we’re together? took us 2 days to move 3 hours worth of stuff.

and please calm your worries, i may wear the mask on occasion, but i am, and will stay, FAR away from “being” a grownup.

in other news.

the other peoples insurance company from the accident INSIST that i give them the opportunity to conduct a recorded, oral interview. Even after they get my statement from the police. what happened will not change whether you label it criminal/civil, and whether its written or on the phone.

I know they’re fishing for loopholes and inconsistencies, so i told the rep i talked to that i will fax him a copy of my written statements, give him a day to look them over, and he can draft any additional clarifying questions that we’ll discuss on wednesday.

had to tell that syhpillis ridden limp dicked son of a bitch to stop talking over me THREE times. was damned near hanging up on him. mother fucker im returning your call, which means you want to hear what i have to say, and talking over me is unacceptable in 100% of business/legal transactions anyway.

i have no problem reading my written statements to him for the recorded interview and told him he’s unlikely to get any additional information.

im such a bitch.

3 days, really?

yeah i know, i dont train anymore.

school is kicking my ass, my training consists of running around like a hamster on coke when im at work (when its not GPP with pegg), and im ready to sleep for 3 days straight.

making plans (again) to go to efs this weekend, crossing my fingers i can pry my round ass outta bed in time.

Its EFS. Some of us would kill to train there, and all you have to do is wake up in time. grrrr.

That pic is priceless Pegg

go kick ass and come tell us how awesome you are Bear.

Dang, I wish I had that baby’s deadlift ROM.

I can squat!!

went light, to see how it feels tomorrow, but it felt so good to be back. much lols were had and comparison of bruises.

had to duckfoot myself a lil, bc toes forward (which i had recently been retrained to use) didnt work well with the ankle.

did 4 sets of 6, 2 at 95 and 2 at 115… the second set at 95 was AWFUL. its like i forgot how to squat for a few min. weight was on my toes, didnt set up properly, but i fixed it on the next one.

deadlifted a few sets up to 225, where i did some singles, and while it felt heavy (hellooo time off) it felt really, really good.

ok- grab your juicebox, this is a long one.

one of my english classes focuses on grant writing, and we have some real money to give away. the class has narrowed it down to 3 choices, and i’d like to hear from the compound and ecommunity.

kids- disadvantaged kids get help from other college level english students writing poetry stuffs… it gets published into a book by the end of the school year, and the leftovers will be sold to fund the project next year. our grant money decides whether its published as a real, professional book or not. the idea is that being a published author will give the kids a self esteem boost and show em that with work, theres a way out of the crappy economic situation theyre in.

felons- local halfway house will help convicted felons about to re-enter society by giving them a place to stay for 2 months, classes about re-entry, budgeting, job hunting, and the interview rights and wrongs. they’ll be required to volunteer and do various community service stuffs, along with volunteering at the shelter and possibly helping others. reports back will show whether or not the shelter is successful. (it does amazing things already in this area.)

wimmenz- the abused women’s shelter is the only one in the 5 county area, 24hr hotline and entry available. the grant money will go toward document replacement (drivers license, birth certificates), gas cards, phone cards, mailing supplies, and weekly outings (bowling, pizza, small holiday gifts, etc). This shelter has been around for about 30 years, and has also been a big help to lots of people.

so, i want to hear from the epublic with your own experiences/opinions. pm if you want, i will not share any personal information or plagiarize.

as a class, we’ll be visiting each of the 3 places 3 times, for about 2 hours each- observing, interviewing, etc.

my previous volunteer experience has been with Habitat for Humanity. After a few hundred hours and several houses, i saw a trend that frustrated the crap out of me. As part of the house award, those who were getting the new house had a habit of standing around more than they were working. Lots of expert volunteers on site at all times to help direct work flow, and there was never nothing to do. I stopped going because busting my ass made me feel good, until i saw those douchebags barely breaking a sweat most days.

oh and if anyone knows “deconstruction” as it applies to literature, g’head and try to explain that one to me, as well.

Good to hear, Bear - glad to hear you’re back in the gym. Envy you a bit - 225 deadlift would just about snap my spine. But you do what you can. Take it easy though eh? I’m sure you’re sensible enough not too push too hard too soon.

That’s a really tough decision and they all sound like good causes. My kneejerk response is the women’s shelter because I think they really need it and that is my pet issue however having thought about it I favour the kids.

My reason is I think it would have the most lasting impact. I think back at my teens and my troubles and having had a few accomplishments as a kid really REALLY made a difference in my life when it came time to smarten up and do something with my life. There were times in my teens that were quite rough but I hung on to my academic and athletic achievements and I think it’s fair to say that having the experience of accomplishment I was able to realize it yet again. I don’t think it matters what the accomplishment is as much as the experience of achievement.

edit: Also, I can elaborate more if you like.

if you’d like to, d, it’d be wonderful. if you dont want to share too much private info you can pm me.

Like Deb my knee-jerk response was the women’s shelter. Then I thought about the kids because I know some who made it out of a tough life to make something of themselves and be the first person in their family to graduate high school and/or college.

I hate to say it, but I mentally scoffed at helping the felons. And that is why I choose them. You know not all of them are going to succeed, but you don’t know that about any of these groups of people and I think felons get a bad rap. I lived with a girl who was pretty cool, grew up in a nice stable house in the 'burbs, got into drugs in high school and while high accidentally ran over a guy and killed him. She now has to put that on every job application. She had a very supportive family and an awesome P.O. but not everyone has those things.

Anything to help people re-adjust to civilian life and become a productive member of society is a good use of money, IMO. Now, you’re not going to convert hardened, lifetime criminals, but those that were maybe in the wrong place at the wrong time or who just want to change their lives could definitely use the kind of help a halfway house could provide.

Greeney already said it for me. The felons would be my choice because that is the most unpopular cause that few want to help. I’m all about the underdog.

Yay! You made to EFS and pulled 225 while still banged up - super impressive.

I agree with Deb, hard decision on he grant money and like everyone said, the women’s shelter would be the natural choice, we being womenz and all… But I’m with kimba and greeny, the ex-offenders program would be my top pick. They truely are a forgotten and excluded population and programs that help them assimilate back into society are so valuable, especially considering the high rate of recidivism, etc.

Don’t know anything about “deconstructing” lit - but deconstructing anything always sounds fun!

deconstructing = critical analysis of characterization, setting (place, time), language structure ect…

my experience is that these analysis can often be subjective - who can really say what was happening in the author’s mind, but a good decontruction will be able to bring out many supportive points.

ex: saying George Lucas in Star Wars, is arguing that beastility is Ok by Humanizing Chewbacca. Note this is a bad analysis unless you care to argue and find good supportive evidence.

VS

George Lucas through his portrayal of Luke and his relationship with Dark Vader, is exploring the love-hate relationship between parents and their offspring or more precisely father and son rivalry and such. more plausible with plenty of evidence.

Yeah I’m a geek.

I have a gut reaction against the fellons too. I would cast my vote towards the woman shelter out of biggotry.

Tough one. They are all worthy causes.

Am I right in thinking the kids are already getting help from the college students and the grant would pay for the book? It’s a lovely idea but there are other ways to publish - websites, for instance. Put up a website with advertising, publicise it and they may be able to fund their own book in time. Lord knows there are plenty of books out there that have sprung from websites.

I’m big on second chances so I’d be more inclined to go with the felons or the women. You can look at it in terms of the women got into that situation through no fault of their own (other than, possibly, poor judgement) while the felons commited a crime, but that can also be attributed to poor judgement. As the felons are also doing stuff in the community to atone, if you will, I don’t see it as a less worthy cause. Giving someone the chance to do something positive is a real gift.

Congrats on getting back to the weights. Just going that first day after time-off is always the hardest part for me.

I’ll put my vote in for the felons as well. My gut reaction (I read everyone’s posts about their picks before I got back to your original explanation posts) was “why are all these women wanting to help felons over children?” However, having now read your descriptions, the kiddies option doesn’t sound like a very great way to spend money. I grew up very poor and I don’t think having anything I wrote published would have helped at all. I needed food, clothes, and role models, not some stupid book with my name attached to it. I also like the womenz shelter idea. I’ve worked with some of the local shelters here, and they can do great work. But, from your description, I’d say the felons program will get the most good and offer the most extra support, for the money you’d be giving them.

this is really helping. keep it up, bitches!
