Layne Norton vs. Ice Cream Fitness

I say do one contest just to have fun and get a feel for it, and then be a low cost prep coach. I would pay for that. I would want a coach to just spend an hour total with me a week. Most of the prep coaches I see look expensive and very hands on (worth the $) or expensive but will just send you emails with macros for the week lol. not sure if that’s a really good business model tbh
I have a buddy who knows a hell of a lot about training and nutrition. He competed once, and while he didn’t place in a very stacked contest, he was shredded all to hell, easily the most ripped dude in his class (of about 15 competitors! He placed 6th). While his height worked against him on stage, having those photos of himself was all he really needed to have people listen to him when they had questions about cutting up. Even if you never compete (I know how hard it is to do this while leading a ‘normal’ life), with your knowledge, it’s be awesome to see you shred up!

…and if you do ever decide to compete, I’ll make sure to show up and cheer ya on.

You talked about height and quoted my post so I assumed you were talking about me. Then you talked about great knowledge so I assumed Brick. Soo to be safe, yes it would be great to see Bauber shred up : )

I’ll definitely compete in the next few years. The competition event itself doesnt appeal to me much atm, but the process and progress you go through to go there does.

hehe, well, wherever it applies I guess. I was actually chiming in agreement with you that it’d be cool to see Brick shred up. I know he fluctuates a lot due to real life concerns, but I recall some times in the past where he’s beefed up quite a bit. Would be damn cool to see an actual RD who understands people “like us” for a change.

And as a little aside, Bauber and I have been in contact back and forth for a few weeks now

Both

To me, the main aim, aside from earning a living, as we all know, of a fitness professional is to help people get in shape and healthy and perform better.

Now, whether someone is competent or highly successful, at this age, I’ve grown VERY tired of braggarts. Seriously, if someone is successful, then I give credit. But that’s where it ends! I don’t have to be reminded over and over and over again by the successful person of what he does or how everyone else is a jerkoff doing it wrong. Like… say someone is a dentist. That’s an admirable position and it probably took some smarts and hard work and sacrifice to attain the position. But I don’t need to be reminded over and over and over again the person is a dentist. Many fitness professionals have this sort of tenor in their social media updates as of late: "Look at me; I’m successful. Other gurus do it wrong, and I do it right. I’m sure some are harmless, nice guys, but this stuff gets annoying and distasteful.

Same low brow stuff goes for these You Tube trendies who make videos on almost nothing informative, but to remind everyone who’s natural or not or do other sorts of bashing. If someone wants to bash Bostin Lloyd because he’s doing bodybuilding drugs “wrong” and how he’s obviously "all roids because he went from a semi-built, semi-chubby 19 year old to a goddamn hulk in a year because of roid use, then screw them–as if there’s some right age to start them or how to use them; you know, because at 19 T is just flooding the body and all top IFBB pros “waited”. It’s goddamn corny to follow people around on You Tube to bash them. If I had a popular You Tube video and I wanted to discuss natty limits, I’d just say basic stuff like, if someone has an FFMI of 25 or more, it can REASONABLY be assumed there’s drug use. If some kid emailed me, “Do you think Kali is natural?”, I’d simply write back and say, “See my video in which I discuss reasonable natural limits” and not have to be a huge baby and make a whole video titled something like “Did Kali get that big because of tuna and ramen noodles?” or “Kali is a liar”.

As some of us have recognized, the fitness world is flooded with distasteful and INFANTILE people.
So much truth in here.

Has Layne accomplished things? Yes, he has. Does he annoy the shit out of me? Yes, he does. It amazes me to see that anyone could be conceited enough to plaster PhD after his name every time it appears (like he’s apparently the only bodybuilder/powerlifter out there who has ever achieved a high level of education). Dave Palumbo has an MD (a much bigger accomplishment IMO), but you don’t see him bragging about being “Dr. Dave Palumbo” at every opportunity.

That said, no one should have to deal with slander when it could potentially affect your income and/or other aspects of your professional life. There’s a difference between a call-out and an opinion. Calling out Layne Norton as a fake natty is wrong. Saying “based on my years of experience, my opinion is that it is likely that Layne is using because…” is something entirely different.

Jason Blaha is definitely in the wrong here. I just think Layne’s such a piece of shit that it’s hard to feel sorry for the guy.

All this age of YT fitness gurus has taught me is that I really, really need to make a YouTube fitness channel. Pump it up with broscience and braggadocio, make inflammatory statements (except against Layne Norton clearly), get a twin, and make some cute catchphrases —> BOOM! Instant success.

I watched a few videos of Ice Cream Fitness. I actually found him to be interesting on a couple topics and didn’t sense any arrogance. But I also don’t know any details about the situation between him and Layne Norton.

Great post!

I never read anything by Layne and for the first time I heard him talk on the new Supertraining podcast recently. The guy seemed actually pretty down to earth and not like he flaunts anything at all.

Then I went to his website and it’s big, bold, caps-locked titles of I’M LAYNE NORTON plastered everywhere which gave me the overall impression that his marketing strategy is himself role-playing Tony Stark. I thought it was pretty fucking hilarious.

But I wanna know where all these shitty youtube channels are. I don’t spend much time on youtube and anything I’ve tried to find regarding lifting has usually been good and informative for me.

Actually, there are -so- many good and informative videos and articles on the web it really makes me wonder how the shitty ones get views.

I think Layne Norton is one of those people who is actually a really good guy in real life, but goes way overboard on the internet.

George Leeman trained with him not long ago and had nothing but the nicest things to say about the man. In fact I think he even called him humble lol.

Not all too relevant but It’s gotta be said, Mike Chang is an absolute cunt.

Yes he is.

On that note, anybody see the “Mike Chang cheated” ad campaign? The guy is shameless…

Oh man, I am so sick of seeing this guy’s ads plastered all over the internet. I’ve known people that have said he’s an inspiration, because he’s Asian, and there aren’t many Asian bodybuilding leaders. I tried in vain to convince them he’s a charlatan, and to choose their heros more carefully.

The internet fitness scene has become all about ego, personality, and shitty youtube videos of some guy talking in monotone with bad lighting and no evidence or credentials to back what he’s saying. I feel for anyone getting into fitness/weightlifting now with all the garbage out there. I mean there are some great writers/strength coaches out there, but how would a newb be able to tell a Dave Tate from an Ian McCarthy? (aside from the obvious…)

YouTube should require new users to watch every video in the EliteFTS “So You Think You can…” series and subscribe to strengthcamp before letting them watch any other fitness vids.

Side rant: The Mike Chang ad is especially annoying because the first time I saw it, I had some small glimmer of hope that this douche might have some integrity. That glimmer was crushed like a cockroach daring to run under Benedikt Magnusson’s deadlift.

Little update for those interested.

I think its good to finally see laynes side of the story. Now we can let this whole thing die and forget about blaha

Good stuff

Haven’t really followed this crap, but it seems that Layne should have just “laughed it off”. Why bother what some ADHD kiddos say on social media.
