Why are people blaming Crossfit? Why blame at all?
Stop blaming altogether and figure out what happened to make sure it doesn’t anymore.
Blaming cross fit for that accident is like blaming creatine for the high school football kid(s) dying.

If the main event CFit games are any indication, they have a ton of clutter around their shit, during events that basically require bailouts to happen(the Strength Elimination events mean you do the lifts until you fail a weight, that is your placement/points). From a singular lift perspective it’s a freak accident, but most certainly a preventable one and not as much of a statistical outlier as it would seem(how many bailouts behind a lifter before the bar bounces off something?).
The programming isn’t really to blame(even if I still think it’s retarded), but CFit shouldn’t be absolved from blame.
It’s a freak weightlifting accident that could happen at any gym in the world at any time.
No programming made him miss a lift (which every gym goer in the world has done) and no training program made the weight happen to take a 1 in a trillion bounce and injury the poor guy.

Technically correct, if every gym had clutter around an olympic weightlifting station that a failed Snatch dumped backwards could bounce off of back into the athlete. It was a preventable freak accident, really sad.
Edit: Also the programming actually kind of does make him miss a lift, as I explained above. It was a strength elimination round. You do the lifts, going up in increments of weight, until you cannot(so, missed lift). That round is your placement to determine points awarded.
So… ya I do think CF is at least in some small part responsible. Maybe not legally so, but I’m not going to hold it against anyone who says ‘CF is a pretty shitty organization’ in light of such an injury.
Once again my faith in humanity has taken a hit. How anyone can say he deserved this because he is an xfitter is just so wrong. I love the internet and what it has to offer but lack of responsibility of what is wrote in it makes these fucked up comments all too common. The lack of accountability is shameful.
Now I am aware that they probably really don’t mean it to just type it shows what kind a person they are.

Im not a fan of xfit myself but for chrisakes
Thanks for this Chris.
The craziest thing about it is that the people who are saying this are the same ones who treat Zyzz like a god. Meanwhile he died of his own stupidity. Shows that we have at least some class on this forum for us to recognize the problem but still pray for this guy.
It is a shame what happened to Kevin and I hope that he somehow miraculously recovers from this. Wouldn’t wish this upon anybody.

Matty, NOBODY is saying he deserved this…this is tragic on a huge scale, I donated to his fund to help pay for his insurance.
But Glassman started this culture that leaks down, Broken necks/Rabdo/Uncle Pukey/SLAP tears ect.
Hell, how can you read his quote and not say he deserves some scrutiny?

Dude I totally agree with you, my statement was geared towards the faceless internet commenters that felt that Ogar deserved the injury just because he was partaking in crossfit fuckery.

If my crossfit experiences at half a dozen gyms can be extrapolated to a larger picture of crossfit (and admittedly this may not be correct, I can only go by what I’ve seen), the crossfit community has largely moved away from Glassman’s bullshit.
Crossfit gym owners and trainers who I’ve spoken to tend to be embarrassed by him. Things like SLAP tears are still not taken seriously enough, IMO, but Rabdo is largely being recognized as a serious problem. And I’ve never met a person, crossfitter or not, who would support Glassman’s comment on broken necks.

Agree on all counts Flip. Two good friends of mine own Crossfit gyms and they try and distance themselves from HQ as far as they can.
I horrible for Ogar, and that’s why I donated money…But the whole culture of “we are crossfit warriors and rules don’t apply to us” needs to GTFO.
UtahLama wrote:
Oh and how long until they name a WOD after him? I’m guessing it is already in the works.
The “Ogar WOD”, from the guy he trains/works with.
Including the lift he got injured on, even if it was one of his favorites? I dunno, kinda creepy.
flipcollar wrote:
Any idea how much time between each of the workouts? Was this all in the same day?
Yeah, I think it was same day. I can’t find a complete schedule of how the events/heats were run, but I read there were a few hours between each. So, yes, I’d say there was cumulative fatigue, but it looks like it was the first “heavy” lift of the day (the rest being higher reps for time or whatever). I’ve also read that it happened on the first rep with “just” 235, a weight he seems to have managed plenty in training, for whatever it’s worth.
The story is actually getting more mainstream attention than I thought it would, on CBS in Colorado (where he’s from), in the NY Daily News, and other outlets. For some reason, I didn’t think it would be “that big” kind of news. I don’t think the “main” CF page has said anything at all about it, but tons of affiliates have. The total donations are up to around $150k.
Found this. Hope it’s not to grim or negative to share.
Hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but something’s weird about the video. No sound (for video in the 21st century and at a CF event?!?), weird hiccup/skip right at the end, abruptly edited. But anyhow:
It’s an odd viewing angle to judge what happened with the bar, but the blue plates behind him definitely move as the bar approach the ground, but that’s just about where the weird hiccup/jump is. It’s hard to tell, but it kinda seems like he winces shortly after coming out of the hole right before bailing. Maybe something got tweaked and caused him to ditch? Just guessing (not like that’s too helpful or productive).
DoubleDuce wrote:
doesn’t look like it bounced, he just dropped in on hi back?
Ya it looks like it just hits his low back and rolls off I to those other plates.
Thoughts on XFit aside, I hate when anyone gets injured pursuing something they are enthsiastic about. Yes, I’m sure there are plenty of people out there hating on the housewife/weekend warrior-Crossfit-junkies who just look like they’re intentionally trying to get hurt with every session, but you gotta give credit to the folks at the top of the sport regardless.
Any activity involving moving heavy weights involves some degree of risk, and it’s a shame that people seem willing to use one person’s misfortune to slam the entire XF community.

I don’t think that people are slamming the community at all, it is in fact one of Crossfits great redeeming assets.
I am slamming Glassman and HQ and their culture of stupidity and recklessness…according to Glasshole, this is just an occupational hazard.
Disgusting.
If you venture off of this site there are numerous places where people are slamming xfit as a whole and making fun of Ogar’s injury. Like I said in an earlier post, we have been doing a very good job on this website to feel for Ogar while at the same time recognizing the problem.
The people on the internet who use brah in every other sentence and worship Jeff Seid and Zyzz like the second coming of Christ are the ones who are saying this. (should be pretty obvious what website forum I am referring to, it unfortunately is one of the top two links that show up when you google Kevin Ogar).
Glassman is making an enormous profit training people for however much it is, 2 guys at my gym have gotten “certified” and I wouldn’t trust them teaching a broomstick squat.
I’m extremely thankful his team/gym somehow raised money for insurance to take away some of the burden.
EDIT: Looked up a forum post on TNATION’s sisters website…was kind of disgusting how they were joking about it.
