Just Saw Merriman Doing Half Squats

on espn during his workout at venice beach.

i figured most nfl athletes would at least try to go near parallel :stuck_out_tongue:

nonetheless, is there any advantages to half-squats for them? he just came back from reconstructive knee surgery if that helps. high bar.

half squats are worse for jacked knees cause you can use a lot more weight.

Nov 07 I shattered my tibia, broke my fibula, and tore my ACL and MCL. I have had 4 suregeries since then and still dont have an ACL or MCL and I am back to squatting 225x10 at a depth that will pass in most feds (IPF would be a coin toss)ā€¦so if you are using ā€œbad kneesā€ as an excuse to squat high, then they better REALLY be FUBAR!

I remember that too. I think he said he gets his players to squat to 90 degrees which is somewhat above parallel. His logic being that squating to that depth better replicates the range of motion in football, as well as reducing the chance of a player rounding his back on the lift.

The whole ATG or not argument is both tired and retarded. Mostly on the part of the ATG crowd. First of all, in this case, you donā€™t know jack about how Shawn Merriman trains. He may also do full squats in his training. You guys are all aware he has a knee injury, so, WTF? Maybe he canā€™t go full squat right now. Duh. Idiots.

Second, just because you can do full squats with out hurting your knees and it is actually good for them, doesnā€™t mean half squats are bad for them and are not also good for them. Athletically, in football and most other sports, youā€™re never working out of a full squat position so itā€™s a reasonable argument (weather right or wrong) that Squatting to a level some where between half and parallel is better.

Bottom line, most you ATG guys donā€™t know what youā€™re talking about. Youā€™re just trying to look tough or cool and, from what Iā€™ve seen on YouTube, a lot of you donā€™t even know what ATG is.

I dunnoā€¦I think he just had a total knee rebuild, it was a photo shoot, I donā€™t think I would take to much away from it. Iā€™ve seen some vids recently, I think of the FSU football weight program and they were going ATGā€¦and the atmosphere was just sickā€¦dude was bouncing up and down like a jack in the box with about 6 on the barā€¦he looked maybe 220ā€¦whole team was just going nuts around him.

well considering this site lashes on every gym rat who curls in the cage or squats 1/4th paralell why should he be exempt, because he makes a lot of money? we take it out on actors too and they kill football players salaries.
