Just. Don't. Suck (Part 1)

Eh. Not by definition. This one is a big deal because it’s new, we have no immunities and no medication, and I understand all that. I think we’re on the same page about the response; I’m somewhat concerned over the longer-term consequences we are creating.

Agreed. I think we’ll be dealing with the aftermath for a very, very long time.

I’m wondering if we’ll be worse off long term because this virus’ biggest victim is going to be the economy. Venezuela doesn’t look very good these days. If I had to choose between that or letting this virus run its course…

That’s exactly where I land

My wife and I should be fine because we both work for the government more or less. She teaches and they have an okay union. She’s also salary so she’ll keep getting paid.

It’s depressing to think about the small businesses - especially the food industry. No customers, no income, unable to pay employees and unable to cover the lease. The government can’t bail them out because they’d have to just create more money and that would just drop the value of everyone’s dollar.

We’re sprinting downhill for hard times. This is worldwide, but part of me is suspicious. This seems like the perfect platform for the democrats and they’ve shown they’re crazy enough to do anything to win even if it means crushing the citizens.

On the other hand, maybe a lack of rallies will diminish their chances of brainwashing more people and Trump will win again.

I feel like Bernie is smiling in his sleep when he hears about things like toilet paper being in short supply and people looking to the government for help.

We’re a couple days away from all of our restaurants being take-out only. Food makes up a huge portion of our employment and economy in my city. We’re tiny, probably around 70,000 in population and I’d wager at least half the workers rely on tips and the seasonal tourism influx to make ends meet. Feel for them.

Concerning your comment about the democrats: Remember Obama’s friend Emanual (sic) who famously thought something like “never let a good crisis go to waste”.

What have the Democrats done to make you suspicious that Trump hasn’t already done himself with regards to the response here? Don’t let yourself get dragged into conspiracy theory thinking, and don’t fool yourself into thinking only Bernie is grinning about people hurting while Trump, who has never slept outside of a penthouse or a 5-star hotel in his life, gives a crap about anybody other than himself. All politicians are full of crap, and all political rallies are brainwashing. It’s not a left vs right thing.

Some industries are going to be removed from the pain for a while while others will suffer immediately. My buddy builds sets for concerts and trade shows. He laid off 23 people yesterday. We coach kids and parents are freaking out. We’re feeling the hurt too. Then it’s just gonna trickle down from industry to industry as people stop getting payed and stop spending money. I’m worried that this is gonna get bad… real bad

It’s the varying degrees of crazy. The behavior since the last election stands out. I’ve always leaned right, but I’ve found the Democrats tolerable. Not anymore. They clearly want a welfare state and are pushing for it.

I’ve also never seen the efforts they’ve put forth to impeach Trump. I know they went after Clinton but I don’t recall it going on for his entire term.

None of that has to do with the virus.

I think all of the officials are worried about inaction. Health people say do this and everyone listens for fear of liability.

I think it’s this plus the opportunity to be THE HERO that stopped coronavirus (because we’ll never be able to look backwards at actions vs. spread).

Everybody leaned one way and now finds the other side intolerable. The GOP wants you to think the Dems want welfare for all and the Dems want you to think Trump is a Nazi. Just try to remember that when you wonder aloud if your opposing party wants to hurt America, it’s exactly what your political leader wants you to think, and the news sources you choose, based on your leanings, will confirm this.

I saw a statistic that just watching 3 minutes of cable news in a day makes you 27% more likely to report that you had a “bad day”

I don’t even watch the local news. I think it surprises people when I’m at work. They’ll say “You know that (insert story) that was on the news this weekend? Well, that was my uncle.” No, no I didn’t hear about that because I hate the news.

I can definitely say my day has never improved from watching the news but I’ve definitely found myself getting upset.

When I start getting irate around a “contentious issue of the day”, i have to remind myself of this. And the fact that smart, decent people that I respect enormously disagree with me strongly on whatever the subject is.

Being left leaning and being in the military and working blue collar jobs has shown me that no matter how abhorrent one might find someone else’s political views, those views usually have NO bearing on the decency of that person. Fortunately, @Frank_C has never attacked or even insinuated anything bad about people who follow political views, he’s more talking about the politicians, which is always going to be cool in my book - I just want to discourage the idea that one side holds the moral high ground. Elizabeth Warren tried to use promising less veteran suicides to get herself elected, and Trump suggested that a very recently dead world war 2 Veteran was in hell, at a political rally because his wife voted against him. You see how both those things are unforgivable and shameless?
There aren’t even 2 sides, there are like 50. You could make a whole party compromised of pro-choice Republicans, or of pro-gun Democrats, or Trump-hating conservatives, or Hillary-hating liberals.
If there were 2 sides, it’d probably just be the ultra-rich, and the rest of us, who spend our time arguing amongst ourselves about who wastes more money while the billionaires somehow keep making more money every time there’s a recession.

Not that it matters at all for your point, but I think we’re talking about a Vietnam vet. So now I’m not even sure why I bring it up, but I’ve already typed it out, so there you go.

I think it has basically always come down to this, hasn’t it? Following this line: we more or less have an elitist government with an illusion of choice; the people get to vote, but only between candidates the political elite have already deemed acceptable. I don’t disagree this is where we’ve landed.

We’re not talking about John Mccain, we’re talking about John Dingell. He’s just another dead veteran who got insulted post Mortem.

I’m with @Frank_C, I don’t watch news, or read news papers, it’s all fear mongering propaganda.
