This is not good, you’ve done pretty much everything right as far as I can tell.
Yep. I had a longer than usual chat with my PT and we’re both stumped. She tried some manual manipulation of the joint while I moved it through my difficult ranges of motion. It seems that the head of my humerus might elevate in the socket which causes some pretty bad impingement. Unfortunately, she has no idea why that happening. It’s normally a rotator cuff issue but we’ve hammered that and my shoulder is probably stronger than it’s ever been in terms of scapular movement and stabilization.
That sucks to hear man. You can still deadlift though, right?
I’m sorry. You’re going back to the same surgeon?
sounds weird, is it just really tight ??
Yeah, as far as I know.
Yeah. I don’t even know what the problem could be. The only stuff I’ve read about complications is tearing the biceps tendon again.
It feels like I need to be doing assisted overhead press. I don’t think that’s really a thing though.
I mean, I don’t know anything, but if your shoulder is gliding that high there’s a number of things that could be torn (at least 3, I think).
It’s not necessarily a direct morbidity from whatever the last procedure was, even though it seems like it should be; we could have created (or even missed) a whole separate injury.
Anyway, I’m speculating, which isn’t helpful. I wish you the best of luck, sir.
That’s the confusing part. Everything supposedly looked good during the operation. I should be good to go and yet here I am…
You could do it against reverse bands, if you had a tall enough rack. Maybe best to do seated or z-press. Except that the assistance reduces the closer you are to lockout, so not sure if that would help.
Between deadlifts, clean pulls, DB incline and high incline and hammer strength curls, isn’t all of that putting a lot of stress on your bicep tendon? Not that it’s anything you did necessarily, just wondering how much it can handle at this point.
I’m definitely using it. My right bicep is two pounds stronger than my left right now. I didn’t realize it, but the bicep plays a big role in shoulder flexion. I’m not sure how that works now that my tendon is attached to the humerus instead of the scapula. You’d think they’d mention it if it meant that my arm function was going to change…especially when I asked if the surgery would affect my ability to move my arm in any way.
Here’s a visual aid. The second movement hurts pretty good but I’m able to lean a bench back two notches and press pain free. It’s weird.
At 20 weeks, most athletes return to full practice or competition including swimmers and throwers. I can’t imagine trying either of those right now.
Sorry to hear that man! That’s no bueno… yeah from the video I can tell it hurts pretty good. Hopefully the surgeon will have some more insight although I wouldn’t cross my fingers. I’d look at seeing an orthopedic as well. Unfortunately they’re just gonna want to do another mri im sure. Sorry dude!
My doc is an ortho.
That’s what I’m thinking. And the kick in the pants is that I’ve met my out of pocket max for the year so everything is free right now. I have a feeling I’m going to see him in January and they’ll want an MRI. I mentioned that today but they won’t order anything without Dr’s orders. I’ll get to pay my full deductible in the first month of the year…again.
Oh man. Sorry to hear that J. I’m not an expert on it but yeah looks like something is badly impinged or severely fibrosed. Hope they’ll be able to sort it out.
Curious…if you do the second movement from your video, and then while it’s fully extended, bring your arm towards the middle like where it’s supposed to end up on the first movement, how do you feel?
Go to a chiro and see if they’ll order the mri. It should still be good on January.
Chiros in the US are allowed to order MRIs? Nice!
Yeah my chiro ordered mine. They can do all sorts of things if they jump through a few medical insurance hoops
Call and tell them that
It’s times like this you wish Eric Cressey, John Rusin, Mike Robertson et al. had a presence on these forums. Wishing you luck in January!
