for some reason i cannot get my hands coordinated with my feet when i jump rope…my feet go faster than my hands can…do you hav any tips on fixing that? and is it ok if i just jump rope without the rope or is the rope an important part?
Keep practicing. It’ll take a little time, but with consistent practice, you’ll get it.
Also, make sure you have a good jump rope. There are a lot of crappy ones out there that don’t work very well. I prefer the Everlast leather jump rope with wooden handles, but Coach Davies recommends the cheap plastic ones. And there were a few that were recommend in the T-Jack reports.
Also, go read the Renegade Rope Work article by Coach John Davies.
Keep practicing. Search for Coach Davies Renegade Rope Training, as posted above.
But more importantly, how the hell can your feet go faster than your hands? You should jump the rope when it arrives, not just jump up and down and hope for the rhythm. Jump the rope. You’ll eventually get the rhythm down.
One thing that might help is double jumping your feet (not the standard double jump, the opposite). Jump the rope, bounce again while the rope is over your head and then jump the rope as it goes under. It’s a different rhythm, you’ll be doing a jump-bounce-jump-bounce etc., with jump being when the rope goes under your feet. Compared to normal skipping, your hands will be moving half as fast as they should be but you should be able to keep up a rhythm that way.
Also, when you do read the article by Davies, you’ll see that he recommends moving your arms out. Imagine holding a barbell in biceps curl position straight in front of you (without the bar). Keep your elbows where they are and spread your hands wider horizontally until they’re no longer in front of you but to your sides. Holding a skipping rope that way allows you to use a small flick to keep the rope going and you’ll be able to spin much much faster. Note that it will slightly shorten your rope arc. If the length is correct it will slide under your feet without touching the ground.
Regarding size:
To make sure yours is the proper length, stand on the centre of the rope with one foot and pull the rope straight up along the side of your body. It’s a perfect fit if the handles come up to your armpits. If it?s too long, tie knots in either side until it?s the right length.
Hope this all helps.
What kind of rope are you using?
If I use a jump rope made of rope I have problems too. I love my leather Everlast jumprope.
Also make sure it is the right size and practice, practice, practice.
