Julius Maddox 800lb Bench?

Close up angle of dem hands spotting during the lift

Looks like he was trying to avoid letting his fingers touch the plates, but his palm and thumb still touched them. They need to give spotters explicit directions on what to do, at least here there was no risk on injury due to bad spotting but remember what happened to Julius at BOB? Or all those IPF meets?

That’s the worst part of all of this. You can tell he wasn’t helping him or even trying to touch the weight, but because of the weight of the lift and the severity of the consequences if he drops it and no one is immediately responsive he had to be as close as possible. If they implement fucking safeties and have lifters Lift in a more safe environment that didn’t require humans who error in everyday movement, this wouldn’t happen. But alas…

You would think that after Julius almost died at BOB due to spotter error they would at least make sure to set the safeties right. There are some meets where they do things right and have spotters who are strong and know what they are doing, unfortunately those are a small minority.

I know, I need to squat and pull 800+ real soon or I won’t be able to sleep at night.

So here’s a question… if the NFL didn’t exist and powerlifting took it’s place in popularity, how much higher do you think the ATWRs would be? Wondering because with his genetic potential, Julius in an alternate universe could already be retired sitting comfortably on a few million, not chasing records in a niche sport (not bashing him, just expressing that most people would go with the millions and early retirement). Wonder what his athletic background is…

We would live in a boring universe if powerlifting was a popular as the NFL.

A lot. PL really is a niche sport still, though growing, and WRs are falling constantly still.

as soon as Weightlifting gets thrown out of the Olympics we’ll see a wave of new WRs, In the lighter weightclasses at least.

I am going to choose to believe that the records would be the same to make me feel better about myself.

Really estimating what they would be is pretty hard. Maybe elite would be 100 lbs heavier per lift, maybe 200 lbs? I gotta believe that the current top of the sport is at least close to the genetic top for lifting heavy.

I just remember a video where Josh Bryant said “When I first met Julius, he looked like the only training he was doing was at the waffle house”.

All I know is he used to sell drugs and spent time in jail, he started lifting weights in a halfway house or something like that. If he was into any sports it wasn’t at a high level, until now.

It’s impossible to really judge that, but there would definitely be way more people at an elite level.

He’s pretty much on a different level now. Honestly, the closest thing I can find to that is Eric Spoto’s 645 X 3.

I’m guessing he missed that last rep, doesn’t make this any less absurd:

I’m pretty sure no one, not even Kirill or Eric Spoto ever did anything more than a single with over 700 lbs. Four reps is just absurd.

I’ve had plateaus and rushes so I get that after you get over a bump things can happen quickly.

But it’s insane how quickly his strength has came on after that record went down. Has there been some new development in “sports sc :syringe:ence”?

I’m bringing a priest with me to the gym from now on. The Lord shall be my spotter.
