Jon Jones Band Work, Is It Wrong?

Good God dude. I’m saying that as long as he’s working hard just about ANYTHING he does will work for him. And, don’t think I called his specific training goofy, just stated that a lot of pros do silly shit. But, because of their genetics they can get away with inferior training methods. As someone else (rundymc I think) mentioned in this thread, the basic shit is still the best. Jones could probably be doing something a little smarter and “better”, but due to hard work and genetics he can in fact polish a turd.

lmfao, this.

Lets discredit the training methods used by one of the most dominant champs in recent history, and take note of the training methods suggested by some nobody’s on the forum here lol

is this real life??
lmfao

Current champ uses particular conditioning method - must be why he’s the champ. Let’s copy him to a T, we will be champions too.

lmfao

he’s certainly not the champ cause he listened to you or some random workout on T-Nation lol. Wake up…
He’s the champ 'cause of superior instincts and favorable genetics, not 'cause of some goofy training program. The facts are that quite a few of these guys train like complete retards but get away with it due to hard work and favorable genetics for their craft.
well whatever, when I read this, it pointed to that direction.

I think the point is that strength and conditioning work is far less important than the other training aspects (sparring, padwork etc.) that the band work or whatever it is isn’t going to make or break him unless it results in an injury.

Fuck good genetics, Jon Jones has highly superior Genetics to anybody in his weight class. He has two brothers that excelled to the elite level at a different pro sport. He has an 84" reach at 205, with the strength of someone maybe 235 or 245. Far as weights and endurance he can train all wrong and still succeed given he doesn’t injure himself.

You can’t assume that someone has elite genetics because they are champions in the UFC. Most people with extreme athleticism choose a more lucrative and safe sport then UFC (Like his brother who chose NFL). Despite all the technique, there’s no telling if Machida would’ve ever been the champ had the UFC fighters made millions of dollars the last 30 years.

he’s champ cuz he implemented techniques he feels benefit him, no matter wtf you think of it. Obviously it works for him, and trying to deny that is just idiotic lol.

brb… someone tell JJ that the reason why he sucks is cause he’s not following T-Nation advice lol

and lol at any time a black athlete excels at something, that the first conclusion is that it’s genetics and instinct, over the fact that he might possibly train like a beast…

I think anytime a guy trains 4 years in a given sport and excels at the level Jon has, you’re going to have to point out that he’s “special” with respect to his innate abilities, instincts and genetics. Otherwise you’d be implying guys like Machida, Shogun, and Bonnar train with that much less intensity (or train REALLY stupid) to allow him to cover that kind of ground.

I really like Jon as a fighter, but let’s not deny he’s got a great frame, a great background, and great genes, or that he has great talent. I really don’t see how it diminishes his accomplishments. Four top ten guys in 9 months afterall. You don’t do that shit without hardwork.
somewhat true, but we aren’t comparing his genetics to some bloke, we’re comparing them to other professional athletes he competes against who also have great genetics. Grant you his reach etc etc is a plus on his side, but you look at his technique, especially when he uses his Greco for take downs, it’s simply flawless. He gets leverage, and uses speed even with his slight frame it’s amazing to watch.

If he uses bands, then so be it, if someone else runs laps and spars in the pool, then so be it, whatever shit works for them, works for them. Especially if they are convinced it is, and most importantly they are dominating the competition.

what I’m saying is that everyone has their own opinion and is entitled to it, thats a given. JBJ has found his ‘keys’ to success, they may not be yours or “conventional”, so rather than try to discredit his training techniques, just don’t follow them…
and what I’m saying is that this band work stuff isn’t one of his keys yet, at least I doubt it is. When he’s still doing it down the line, then we can talk.
