James Toney vs Don Frye

There are some heavy-handed strikers in MMA. Just look at the Manhoef vs. Lawlor fight, both of those guys have serious KO power. Are they as polished and technical with the hands as a guy like Toney (especially Toney is his prime)?. No. Can they slip and play defense like Toney? No. But in terms of pure power, they have big power in the hands. Look at a guy like Phil Nurse who is now training many MMA guys. He has crazy punching power.[/quote]

Of course the two guys you mentioned have power, as do a host of otherr mma fighters. But to compare the punching power of an mma fighter to a boxer is [in best Mike Tyson voice] “Ludicrous”. And yes Toney is a fat old man now and was never a natural HW. I really don’t care. I’d put his power against ANY mma fighter in any weightclass. I’m not talking about Toney 10 years ago either. I’m talking right now. The guy’s been throwing bombs for most of his life wearing 12oz gloves, while mma fighters seldom deliver one hit ko’s with gloves that weigh a 1/3 of that. I really don’t understand how this can be argued.

This is stupid it depends in the fighter not the sport. Are boxers better with their hands duh yes, do they all hit harder NO. Gomi, Vitor, Carwin, Drew McFedries.

I would say on average they do… it just common sense…

Sure but to completely discredit all mma fighters is a huge generalization, but I agree on average they defintely do, it’s what they’re trained for.

My argument is more along the lines of “power no one in MMA can understand.”

I’m not arguing that boxers have better hands. But there are a lot of pretty high-level kickboxers with some serious power and with how much cross-training they do; I think that MMA fighters get exposed to some serious punching power. They might not have as much power as a guy like Toney, but they’ve seen something comparable in training. That’s what I’m trying to get at.

This fight will never happen… and for added post entertainment, here’s Don Frye getting knocked out in some drunken brawl (?) http://www.break.com/usercontent/2007/11/Don-Frye-vs-Leland-Chapmans-Bodyguard-in-hotel-lobby-405745.html#comments-target

Haha. He didn’t even get knocked out he got knocked over, there was a retinue holding him back as soon as he got knocked over. The man was drunk off his ass at the time and the fight took place all over the hotel.
When you’re exposed to only a tiny clip you shouldn’t presume things.
