Irish Marc's First Powerlifting Meet!

Competed yesterday (1/3/2008) in the 100kg class it was a pretty decent meet, good turn out of lifters some absoloute animals.

The Squat went okay could have been better missed 185 pretty badly felt week off the bottom of all my lifts need to get used to squatting in my new shiney ironwork IIs.

Bench was shitty as hell the pause and not being allowed to use suicide grip really fucked me over 140 was a struggle and 145 just stayed in the sticking point going no where I think I am going to be doing some bottom up stuff on my bench as it needs done.

Deadlift went pretty well could have pulled 235 which was the original plan but I deviated for some reason anyway pretty decent day all round.

Considering I was an unequipped lifter in an equipped class I did pretty well.

Came third in my weight class and won my age group so its not a bad launching point for the nationals in June.

What federation is that IPF?, I was thinking of entering a competition myself some time, the sport seems to be picking up a bit in Ireland.

Well done looking good!

Great work, welcome to the word of competitive powerlifting!

Bench and deadlift looked really strong. I think you definitely had more on the deadlift there, but you’ll hit it next time. And the bench pauses were very long.

What are your goals for next time?

The unequipped nationals are in June.

Squat - 190kg Done it in training before just need to get over the nerves early on.

155 Bench - Benched 160 with no pause but I have to work on my lock out something serious.

Deadlift - 240.

I think I will compete at the 100kg class again it felt pretty good and the 90kg class is full of monsters up here anyway.

It was in scotland I’m here at edinburgh at uni.

The meet was with the IPF.

Looking strong, what age group was that? Deadlifts looked very strong, good form as well. Might of wanted to be a little more conservation on the bench opener though.

Nice job Marc! Thanks for posting the vid.

Nice going!!

Did your bench come in a bit over trained? I think you said to me that you’d done 160+ in the gym before?

Cheers mate, it was in the U23 age group.

I warmed up on 315 as well so you might have a point the guy who spotted me in the warm up area said I should have warmed up at 270 tops.

The pause threw me off through I rep 315 (3-4) with no pause usually I will be ready for june.

Cheers Hanley.

Bench felt weak as hell I don’t know what it was combination of nerves/pause but I benched 2 weeks out from the comp and got 150 like it was air and struggled with 160 but it went up.

I think I need to work on my sticking point and definitely train with a pause.

Congrats man, strong!

I was going to ask why you didn’t compete at 90 but you already answered that.

It looks to me that he wasn’t very tight on the bench Hanley. I’m sure with some technique work he would have handled those weights.

You should be so tight in your back and hips that you’re almost tired in those areas after a few max attempts. Learn to take a little arch and get those back muscles tight and then watch what you can bench.
