It seems that I have been a bit over dramatic as of late. I guess that happens. I did have a flash of potential the other day…My company has an opening working at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs. I’m not sure what would be better, getting into those gyms, or checking out the athletes (male or female)? It’s just not for me at this time, but the notice sent a much needed shock through my system, a real wake-up call I’ve been needing for awhile.
Thanks for the link Stephen, and all the other thoughts.
By the way, I placed 2nd. in the over-40 year old- under-24"-tibula/fibula class at my meet. I think the winner had implants, gotta wait for the official x-ray results.
God speed.
Been training here and there, not much to mention. Until…
Got some straps and went to try them out.
Rack pulls: 3x5@ 225
5@ 315
3@ 405…moving along quickly. 2@ 455…what the f**k?. I know that was it though, but just to be sure I did another 3x2 @ 455.
3x2 @ 315 and done. I think I missed at 425 about two months ago. Now this, after over-eating and under-training since then ? I look worse(less lean I mean) but am pulling stonger. I missed before also using straps btw. This isn’t a mystery per say, but my training volume is WAY DOWN these days. I’m lucky if i hit everything once a week, or worse. Anyway, this isn’t an ad for laziness, just an observation !
I guess next I’ll go hit my 300lbs. front squat…may as well.
As long as you’re doing something the body adjusts and gets stronger. Once or twice a week seems to be sufficient as long as you’re pushing your limits. I only hit each body part once a week on average, myself.
A little extra weight on the body does make for stronger sessions for some reason. Works that way for me. I’m not worried about having abs, but have poor appetite usually and have to force feed myself to gain weight. When I get too lean, my lifts go down. When I have a layer of fat on, I’m a fair bit stronger. Don’t get hurt as easily from lifting either.
The short story, I’m going to eat in the cafeteria, checking out my choices. I’m looking at the “vegi-pasta” dish, which is all it has. White shell pasta, zuccinni, tomatoes ect…zero real protein obviously, no meat of course, beans, nuts…nothing.
An RN. overhears me and chimes in “theres plenty of protein in the pasta”. This in white floor shell pasta, in my mind, a pure carb. I only offer that “what little may be there, doesn’t count for much”. Even my jacked up Barilla protein&omega stuff isn’t very much but…fine. She is holding a tray with a grilled cheese, fries, some chocolate milk, chocolate pudding, and a mountain dew. I am holding a plate with 2 chicken breasts, raw broccoli, spinach and tomatoe slices. I’m hungry, under-carbed, and even though it’s my birthday, some dumbass wanted to fight me (yes, it does happen at my job).
I’m almost ashamed of what I said next. “I suppose your eating that pudding for the fiber then?” Classic dead-pan (read: I sounded like an ass). I guess it could’ve been worse. I could’ve been more harsh, but that truly isn’t usually my style. But there it is. She kinda snickered a bit, looked at my food, looked at me, and walked off without a word.
After that I spent my whole meal talking about nutrition (no, I’m no expert, or a good speller) with a couple of co-workers. “New years comin up, time to lose that weight” ect…pardon me while I chew.
I’ll make up for that little barb soon enough I’m sure. For now, go easy on the pasta, ok doll?
Do you have any naughty nurses? THAT is just what the doctor ordered. You know, i’ve been to the hospital a number of times, and never saw a hot nurse. is ER false advertising? Oh yeah, and why do women think protein is evil and carbs are holy? I could never figure that out…
Holidays in the hospital, gotta love it!
I’m happy to report that we have MANY very lovely ladies around here. Nurses that I would just love to un-wrap from their scrubs…is that wrong? I don’t think so.
EDT for my B-day: Thought I’d just try something different, just for fun.
weighted dips w/25lbs.
pullups 6
ab wheel 12
front squats 12@135…Right. So, I went round and round, rotating these four moves with little rest. Maybe not perfect EDT style, but you get the idea. I went for about 25-30 mins and then somehow lost count like an idiot. Went for 45 min total, which went by fast, and was just pretty burnt at the end.
I was huffing and puffing, sweating pretty good, good times. My whole body was pumped afterwards. Not the perfect balance of moves, but at a certain point, every muscle I had was firing just to keep it going! New year, new training drive. High volume with low(ish) weights…That should do just fine.
Sounds like you’ve found your motivation again Zman, nice job. And admiring the ladies is perfectly acceptable. Something about a cutie in scrubs is hot!
Happy New Year…I am my own project. I’ve been waiting to take another run at my sister (training wise) who wants/needs to drop bodyweight/fat…for all the health reasons ect. that we could all think of. While I do have a plan, short and long term, I also have slacked for the last 2 1/2 months on myself. I’m still at 175 lbs. but, look a lot different than 3 months ago. Very typical indeed, especially for me.
Suppliment/food funds are tight, but my gym is free. I know the results from the last time…shed bodyfat and gain strength. And I’ll probably drop below 170lbs. by the time I’m done. Fine then. Not a problem for now. There will be time to build coming soon. I am my own project, but sister dear…your coming along for the ride.
Godspeed.
Hey boys, and miss C. Just trying to get back in the saddle I suppose.
Jan…build up the volume again and get ready to…
Feb-march: I think Robert Cray said it best…“the forcast calls for pain”. Heavy work, 3-6 rep range, sometimes even 1’s & 2’s, CNS “de-load” here and there, but mainly hard, heavy, and groovy. And still hoping a T-Nation vixen will knock on my door! Training in a glorified basement doesn’t help, but it’s all I have for now. Maybe I should work on my personal ad…?
Why I’m an ass…#18. I wasn’t going to include this story on my list but, by the end, it may read worse than I thought! It’s clear that I’m NOT a trainer/coach of any kind. I don’t have any Initials after my name. But people know that I train, study, train others ect…Enter, a sorta-buzzed girl who called me a “meathead” (I’m at 5’10"175lbs.FYI). Turns out, we had a mutual friend, female, who had trained with me for an amazing TWO MONTHS before falling off the wagon.
Of course, she lost her results which means…“I didn’t know anything”…is that right? And so it went for about an hour or so. My friend suggested I just “shut up and sleep with her”, but I just couldn’t hold back! I got her number, and have called her everyday for about 8 days now to train. She did agree that she would, at my free gym no less, but alas, it hasn’t happened. I almost forgot the “ASS” part. I set my alarm, wake her up to train, then go back to sleep when she declines!
Maybe that’s not so bad, but the fact that I find so much joy in it, makes me an ass? I guess I’ve done worse. Hey, did I go to the gym today…
Deadlift: 5 x 10 @ 225…quick & smooth
Alt. with…
Flat Hammer Press: 5x10 @ 60 (db’s)
(alternated cleans and dips as well)
RDL's 4x12 @ 135
alt. with. front squats: 4x12 @ 135
This just took forever to finish, but still felt pretty good. Not much of a plan, just wanting to get a lot of body working. I sure do feel like a meathead tonight, that’s for sure!
You all remember Skids’ recent avatar with the guy back-squating while standing on the swiss ball? With that in mind, I offer this true story from my gym a couple days ago…
A guy I see often was squating 135 ONTO a swiss ball. That is, sitting onto it and bouncing off again. And I do mean bouncing. I just couldn’t NOT say something (After he almost lost it a few times). He was in the squat rack, so I got him to try some front squats with me. Problem solved.
As a joke I told him to “never touch the blue ball again, it might rub off on you”. Did some RDLs as well, then some rack-pulls to finish. I was not very motivated until then, and he doesn’t really lift very seriously at all. Three days later? He was still “a bit sore”. Dam right you were! Just another front squat virgin tainted by the Z-Man. Oh well, I’ve done worse.

The other night, I had to channel my inner-Elaikases. Why?
So I’m walking home (Capital hill/Denver) at about 2am, and a drunk dude stumbles into me. I actually kept him from falling, and the thanks I get? Dude wants to fight me, so I swing him to the ground by his coat, and tell him to go home. He’s cursing, yelling ect…walking after me, so I face him again, hit him with both palms into his chest, and he tumbles over a sidewalk planter box. Down again. I checked him for weapons, and walked away…dudes not finished. He charges AGAIN, wrist lock to the ground, side control and he’s pinned.
I’m fine, he’s fine, and I walk away with him still stumbling around the sidewalk. My buddy said I should have “beat his ass”, but I remember thinking it wouldn’t have been a fair fight! I guess he had no holiday spirit left, good thing I did! Until next time…
