Ok, I read this on a T-Nation thread as a good exercise for your triceps and after searching this site and google I can’t find anything that references how to do these. I’ve tried searching “IH press”, “In Human Press” and “In-Human Press” and can’t find anything. Any help would be appreciated.
So if I got this right, you’re setting up with a PL-style bench form within the smith machine taking an armpit width grip and you’re making sure your elbows flare out as you lower the weight and you press towards your feet as you lift the weight. There is also a recommended thumb-less grip on the bar. I’m not too sure I’ll be implementing that part; more comfortable with closed grip.
Do I have the right understanding of this lift?
I train with some people who do a version of that and it is called a JM Press…basically think of a skullcrusher, but come down to your neck instead of your forehead. To do the movement, you have to flare your elbows out and when you press you are pushing towards your feet.
The IH press is somewhat nicer on the elbows than the JM and allows for more weight… (dis-engage the counter-weights though), plus you can press towards your feet as well as up (major part of the exercise).
To randman: You don’t have to flare your elbows if you don’t want to… Depends somewhat on how you set up. Grip-width is wider if you tuck, and where the bar touches the body changes as well then… You can do them off a 2 board or pins as well if you don’t like the bottom ROM.
On an angled/slanted smith, the bar should more towards your feet as well as up when you press it up, and back towards your when you let it come down.
It’s more of a bbing movement though… But it works nicely for some medium to high rep tri assistance… If you set up right and press towards your feet, that should take the brunt of the weight off your shoulders and hit the tris way more… Nice if your shoulders are tired after benching or so and your elbows don’t feel like extensions…
If it isnt called an “Increase Your Bench Press” then i dont want to do it.

Thats not even close to a JM press.
