tonight i was doing my quads/shoulders routine, i was really tired from a long day at work and a short sleep, also my lower back was kind of jacked up from not warming up well enough on deadlift day which was thrusday…so it was definately a bad idea to be in the gym tonight, but i have not missed a workout in 2 months and wanted to keep that streak going…
anyways so i get to my last set of upright rows, i put up the weight by 10 lbs for my last set to ensure i was going to get enough out of it. but when i finished the set i found i had a sharp pain in my high back only on the right side. its still painful right now. what happens is if i take a deep breath of air i feel a sharp pain. same deal happens but worse if i move my torso/head to the right. i dont think it has anything to do with my lats because currently i can flex them painlessly. the pain is mostly located by the side/back of my rib cage… does anyone have any idea what this might be? and how i should treat it.
I’ve been feeling pretty jacked up lately, i may take this next week off of lifting
I just had a discussion in another thread that upright row could be dangerous as they can cause injury ; though the commenters seemed to be saying it related to possible injuries to the shoulder where your injury or pull seems to be in your upper back.
At any rate, its hard to tell at this point if its an injury or maybe its just a strain. I have found sometimes that from a general standpoint the upper as well as lower back sometimes can really tighten up and cause me pain if i over work it. I have also found that my neck can tighten up where i can barely move it. Not sure if this is what happening in your case; but could be just you have overtrained or overstrained a muscle. Hopefully, this is the case; but it could also be an injury.
Sorry, i dont have any further information. Maybe you will know more tommorrow; if it persists; you should see a doctor.
I think i had this pain a long time ago, and i just basically gave it day. After a goodnights sleep , it was back to normal. Personally , I would take a week off since you’ve been lifting for 2months now and stop doing upright rows with a barbell.
