I have been ordered NO MORE HIGH PROTEIN LOW CARB

Guys, my doctor recently ordered me off of a high protein/low carb diet. I had great success with the T-Dawg diet, and have dicovered that I have a genetic problem…both sets of my grandparents suffer from GOUT, so guess what I developed?

If you are not aware, Gout is caused by your bodies inability to process (rid itself) of uric acid, which is a result of a diet rich in red meat, shellfish, and high protein foods, along with alcohol, and in particular red wine. The uric acid is a crystalline substance that gets lodged into small and sometimes large joints, and causes SEVERE pain. I first discovered this while working out, I noticed that my knees were sore…I chalked it up to being rusty…well, after a week, I could not walk, and the pain had me incapacitated, and taking heavy doses of anti-inflammatory medication and Codene (that was kind of fun actually).

Well, after a week, it went away. A month later, it was back, and in my hands...I could not even tie my shoes, let alone lift.

The doctor asked me ran tests, and low and behold, GOUT. He asked about my diet, and I told him about T-Dawg (he actually agreed with the diet…imagine that), but upon discovering my family history, ordered me OFF of that diet…he basically told me no red meat, protein, or alcohol AT ALL. He may as well have told me to give up golf, sex,and then taken me out back and shot me.

He advised me to start a vegitarian diet. Yuck. I have been doing it for about 2 months, and all is well, the uric acid levels are normal, and I am back working out again…the difference is now I am tired all the time, hungry all the time, and I don’t feel like I have the ‘spark’ I had while t-dawging. Now that I have come to accept being a vegetarian, is there a way to do this to increase my energy level, ie, are there certain things I need to avoid or make sure I eat?

Any advice you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Sir Hacksalot

actually it has to do with the acid alkaline balance in your body. Also what blood type are you type A experience problems digesting protein. Read the Ph miracle and apply it to bodybuilding terms not organic folks. All you have to do is eat more carbs, especially yams, and pinneaple will keep your body alkaline, and allow you to still eat red meat. and keep protein intake high. your body probably doesn’t like ketosis or glucogeneosis which is what happens carbs are low or not present

The type of protein you’re eating can make a big difference as well. Stay clear of very dense protein rich foods such as liver, steak, dark meat poultry, etc. Increase consumption of lighter protein sources such as skinless chicken breasts and fish.

Cherries and cherry juice have been reported to relieve gout. Also make sure you are taking in plenty of folic acid, Vit C, and quercetin(450mg-750mg daily in divided doses). You may have to lower your protein intake but I do not think you need to go vegetarian.

You shouldn’t have been drinking in the first place. If youre going to do the T-Dawg diet work like a man. You drank wine and beer and screwed yourself, thats not part of any diet. Dont blame the diet, blame yourself.

Okay, I’m just going to throw out a couple of things I’ve read, and I may be way off base, so take it with whatever amount of salt you need to. First, you said that you were taking a lot of anti-inflammatories. I’ve always read to not take aspirin in cases of tendonitis, as it tends to crystalize the uric acid in the microtears in the tendon, making the problem worse. Could the anti-inflammatories you were taking possibly have made your condition worse?

Also, Tapper’s suggestion of the acid/base balance made me think of something – my chirpractor has me taking something called Alfajuice, by Solaray, to help with an acid/base balance. You should check with your doc to see if this might help you. Even though I take 6 caps a day, it’s pretty cheap.

Sir H you could try a higher fat, moderate to low protein, moderate to low carb diet. As far as acid, alkaline foods, dairy foods tend to be the most acidic of all. Grains are actually on a par with meat and fish. Nuts are also on the acidic side. Oils are nuetral, and fruits and vegetables are alkaline, so be sure to include them in your diet, especially raw salad foods.

I don’t think he was saying that he was slamming down the booze while on T-Dawg… he was just reporting what his doctor told him he couldn’t have. And if you’re trying to suggest that his gout is a result of drinking, then do this: reach down, pull head out of ass and re-read his post. It runs in his family.

How much salmon and sardines were you eating on T-Dawg? It seems like most people tend to neglect those high fat fish as good T-Dawg foods. I don’t know if omega-3s do anything in particular for gout, but they seem to do at least something for everything. Mercola probably has something helpful to say on this.

You are a schmuck for going to a doctor to fix such a thing in the first place. Doctors prescribe medicine and do surgery, neither of which will do anything for gout. Asparagus, say it again with me…ASPARAGUS, wheatgrass and where are your omega’s 3,6 and 9??? Stay off of the antiinflamitories or you deserve what you get.

Doctors are not much for sport medicine etc but they have put in many years of study at an institute of higher learning to get where they are and diagnose a wide range of conditions, hence the term General Practicioner. I think this qualifies a doctor to diagnose gout. If he had difficulties I’m sure he would have referred the gallant Sir Hacksalot to a specialist. Most of us aren’t qualified to prescribe and diagnose.

why didn’t your doc prescribe the standard treatment of Allopurinol? I would go back if I were you because the modern tx of gout has changed from banning meat proteins (meats are highersources of purines as compared to other protein sources). In theory allopurinol daily with your diet should suffice. If not, utilizing non-meat protein sources should meet your needs without exacerbating the gout

Lots of good advice so far. 2 more possibles. One I’ve heard…how can I put this…blowing your load…gets rid of alot of uric acid so have lots of sex it’s for your health. Or you know a manual simulation. Heheh. Second could you not try a weekly alternating diet. 1 week with the desired protien level and then 2 weeks with less??? Not great but maybe it’s an option. Ciao.

I have had a little gout before… Drink LOTS of water. Try cherry extract (sounds silly but it helps reduce the acid or something). High protein is OK to a point but make sure you get enough other nutrients (read, eat your fruits and veggies!)

Thanks for the advice guys, this was very informative.

I am really astounded by some of the knowledge on this board, and am equally astounded by some of the douchebags that open their mouths and show what fools they are.

Thanks for the advice guys…and let’s hope that it can keep me on the path to progress.
