Day 7 Dan John does not like gangly old goats program

Incline BP ( today called for you to work up to a Max double) so I did

240x2 (PR) my previous best was a single @235 about a month ago…

Bat wings 5x10sec hold
35, 35, 35, 40, 40lb dbs

One arm Press

left arm 1x,2,3,5 @60, 1x2,3,5@65 65 is up 5lbs
right arm same as above . SO I will work 65’s starting next session until I get all the reps and than onward we roll!

Bird Dogs 8sidex5 sec hold

Complex 3x5
85,85,90

Squatties ( kind of back off day of sorts) I did as the program instructed.
95x10, 115x10, 135x10, 185x5,5,5

The bad news is Day 8 calls for 50 @185…I couldn’t even do 50 @135 it may take me all day to get the reps…but I will

So,7 down and 7 to go…weight at 178.5 up 4.5 from the start 3 weeks ago…

Proud parent moment : my son is entering his senior year of high school ( no that’s not the proud parent part…well maybe it is?) and was named by Inside Lacrosse ( kinda the bible of the sport) as one of the top 50 players in the country !! SO happy for him.

incline BP, goblets, hammie curls, hack squat, neutral chins, squats, curls, bat wings, pullovers, straight arm pressdown, rdl, down as one continuos movement just time off getting from one to the next…

hips were really tight and sore this AM, this feels much better…

Time to walk the dogs before the storm moves in…

Damn, the gym was closed because they still don’t have power back…we lost power for about 13 hours but got our back around 2AM…so day 8 will have to wait until tomorrow.

Lost one major branch off a tree. Where did it land? On the hood of the Suburban…good things that vehicle has 225K on it and four other dents…

Okay Goat what is the ultimate goal of such high rep squats, endurance?

still no power anywhere around except in the small section of town we live in! having friends for dinner and a hot shower: its the least we can do.

No power at the gym either…could be a setback in my SQUAAAAT to GLORY PROGRAM!

Joe- According to the book, Dan says its the way to size and eventually strength not only in your squat but overall. A couple of observations that may or may not be accurate…Dan trains a lot of high school and young athletes so growth comes easier to them…plus this is a bulkng program with lots of eating. that I am not doing . For me, its about the mental aspect of grinding out the reps to see what I can do… I guess I am trying to hate squats so much that I end up embracing them when I get back to lower reps. On a different site a bunch of people have done it and everyone claims that the high reps gave them a bigger butt and quads…don’t know, it is the internet afterall.

It is a helluva an endurance and core builder for sure…

Yeah, I used to hear the same thing for a long time, squats & deads will build the whole body. Maybe for some people, but my upper body has always lagged when I concentrate on lower body stuff.

Also, I’ve grown skeptical, like you, of guys who train teenagers or professional athletes and try to take credit for their gains.

Still, the program sounds like a real man maker. Or maybe widow-maker.

Cav- you and I are opposites…My lower body is so far behind that I can Close grip BP as much as I squat…one of things I like about the program is that it covers the whole body. The focus is high rep squats but I have PR’d my Incline and am moving up on one arm presses…

Im not really skeptical of Dan just more weary of the internet 'success" that people claim…

You aren’t alone. I was thrilled last year when I was finally able to outsquat my bench by 20lbs and DL 400. I found on my restart that my legs maintained more strength than upper body.

OP- Im sure you’re upper body will respond shortly!

Well no Day 8 today…gym closed still no power, drove to another gym…same story…came home napped for about 45 min and went outside and did 4x75yd Slosh Pipe Zercher carries, 50 push-ups, sledge hammer hits 20/side, plank 2 min…

Hopefully Day 8 tomorrow.we’ll see.

You’re probably right that eating is a big part of that programme and not doing the feeding part would affect the results somewhat.

Still takes some balls to have a crack at it though.

Finally the Gym got power back so it was day 8 damn you powerline workers. Couldn’t you have called in sick?

Incline BP called for 5 doubles at 20lbs under the max double of last session

225,2,2,2,2,3 ( I added a rep…it was there so I took it)

Bat Wings 40’s these we way harder than last time…
5x10sec hold

One arm Press 3x2,3,5x65 barely made the last 2 reps on the 3rd set with my left, Right arm just cruising along…I will stay at 65 for the next session and see if I improve.

Complex 2 rep sets today 5 of them add weight 85, 90, 95, 100, 105

Squats the goal for today was 50x185…lets just say…NOT TODAY!

21, 10 ( needed more rest), 12, 10… so when I face 50x185 next I have a baseline I will try to get more on the opener and do the total in less sets…hard day today, ended up with a big headache for about 5 minutes when squats were down…I was gassed I ache already…I am a WUSS.

50x185 sounds like something a sadistic PT would try and force you to do so you wouldn’t argue about using the damn machines.

A bit sore this morning in the quads, hammies and glutes…can’t imagine why?

I have about 2 1/2 weeks to go so I need to start thinking about what’s next: a return to 5/3/1? West side 4 skinny bastards ( anyone have any experience with this?), or another Dan John program…that will be after a deload and some max tests to see where I am at .

Foam, stretch, mob, roll around like a child on the floor- 20 min…felt good afterwards ; was so tight and sore when I got up this AM…

goblets, inclines, back squat, facepulls, calf raise, kayak rows, curls, back squat, whip snatch, curls, kayaks, straight arm pressdown done as one rolling set just moving from thing to thing…BB work was with no weight, Db’s heaviest were 35’s…you get the point…just moving around trying not to feel 51.
