To minimize overlap.

E.g. if you do a chest phase right after a shoulders phase, the shoulders will not be able to recover because most chest exercises also involve the shoulders.

If you were to do a leg spec phase right after the shoulder or chest spec phase, there might be some shoulder joint tightness that would make the squat uncomfortable or even dangerous.

CT,

How would one go about learning how to design a program? I push myself and train hard and have pretty much stuck to the proven exercises in the 6-8, 8-10, 10-12 range. However whenever I’ve done one your set programs OVT, HSS and now I,BB I see my gains accelerate.

I really would like to learn how to design a program to fit my specific needs.

Have you read Thibs’ articles on “How to design a damn good program?” Here’s part one and two:

Part One:Strength Training, Bodybuilding & Online Supplement Store - T NATION
Part Two: Strength Training, Bodybuilding & Online Supplement Store - T NATION

I would also recommend checking out CT’s book on High Threshold Muscle Building.
