OK guys. It happened to me this morning. I was deadlifting with, what I thought, was good form. I use a belt when doing heavy singles like today. I was still building to targeted weight and at 315# the lift was good and on my way down I felt what seemed to be a slip and return in my back (don’t want to say slipped disc because I have never experienced one).
I was able to finish all of my ancillary lifts with little pain. When I got home I bathed, put on some cream and took a nap. When I awoke I iced it down.
Now it is kind of sore, as expected. So my question is, has anyone experienced this? If so, what should I do other than rest and ice. Also, advice on when I should try deadlift again?
Occasionally. Not for years though. Could be a slightly slipped disk, but you won’t really know unless you get an MRI, if there’re no other symptoms. Even if it is, most of those (around 85%) get better on their own and many times present no symptoms to begin with.
More likely a pulled muscle. If ice doesn’t hurt ( I couldn’t ice my slipped disk without a leather strap to bite and good painkillers) then standard RICE protocol applies. Try again when it doesn’t hurt to bend over, I guess. You’ll have to go by feel - lighter weights may feel fine, but you find there’s a cutoff point…or not.
disclaimer:I are not a dokter. Him are not mine payshunt.
I can’t say what you should do, but what I would do, is steer clear of any significant back involvement for at least a week and then I’d go through a very light, very light! deadlift session and leave it that for a day or so to see if there’s any residual effects.
I’m finding that even a small injury in a significant area can last a long time and sometimes gets worse before getting better.
Build the weight gradually after that first light session if successfully completed but of course - if the initial pain doesn’t subside or if the light session irritates it, see a doc.
I know the feeling. I just injured my lower back on squats. Take it easy for a while. Ibuprofen and walking seem to help mine. Try to avoid sitting down a lot. Also chiropractors can be a big help when it comes to back injuries.
Last year in a squat, I felt a little ‘tweak’. I racked the weight, kinda thought “Well, that didn’t feel right”, stretched and went home.
By the time I went home, I could hardly stand up straight or tie my shoes. I laid down on the floor and couldn’t get up.
I have a great relationship with my chiropractor, even though deep down she wants me to ditch the squats and deadlifts and do BW squats on the Bosu ball. OK, so it’s not deep down, she told me that…
Advise to ‘take it slow’ until you’re certain you’re back to 100%. Backs are nothing to blow off.
i was coaching some kids, i was running in a straight line, then i went to do a side step, slipped a tiny little bit on the first movement but still did the side step and finished of the demostration pain free… after the kids got going on the drill… i told my fellow trainer what hd happened and he though it was nothing… 1 hour later and i couldnt run, lift, bend. getting out a chair was AGONY. it feels like somebody has grabbed my upperback, left shoulder blade area and they are just squeezing it real tight!
qafter worki did a light bench and weighted row superset circuit to try to warm the area up… there was no pain doing the movements and i think it made it a little less painful. but in have just got out of bed and its worse than yesterday.
any advice?
to the OP, id say let pain be your docter… when u feel u can deadlift, then deadlift. if it hurts a lot stop… icey hot, baths and perhaps stretches on a stability ball…
