How'd You Do It?

who on this internet forum has made any significant strength increases in any lift over the past year and what did you do train/diet/supplements/drugs/rest to get there. No bullshit just want to compare learn and find out more from others . Thanks.

I made the best strength/size gains of my life over the summer. I spent a month and a half with no job and no school, nothing but eating and lifting heavy shit a la conjugate periodization that was tightly planned out.

Once you get back to the stressors of normal life it’s a lot harder to lay down slabs of muscle.

Ghost–I hear that. I put on about 20 lbs of muscle this summer and since then I have been struggling for about 10.

It’s really just a matter of focusing on where you want to make gains and following through. Decide what you want to improve and prioritize it for an extended period of time in your training.

This past year has been good. I set a couple of goals and have actualy exceeded them.

No drugs, no supps, no secrets.

Just a dedicated effort to keep training, and the tennacity to keep hammering away at some cielings that weren’t breaking.

Try working with other lifters. Nothing reinforces some good sound fundamental principals like teaching them to another person.

Added weight sled drags and my squat has increased substantially.

I haven’t added near as much strength and size as I wish, but, so far I have added size and strength by just sticking with heavy basics and a lot of food.

High Standard Training Partners.

I have always made significant gains when I train with people of a high standard. No matter how motivated I can get individually, nothing pushes me harder than competing with others.

The opposite can be said too. Training with duds will only bring you down.

Damn right. Find guys that make you bust your balls week in and week out to keep up.

I went from a 1RM Back Squat of 265 in the beginning of February to a 1RM of 315 in the beginning of June. During this time period I also went from a 1RM Good Morning of 165 to a 5RM Good Morning of 225.

I used a conjugate periodization program (all standard info that’s available here, at elitefts.com and at defrancostraining.com), monitored my extra activity (cut down on surfing, running and jiu-jitsu) and made sure I got sufficient calories in (I ate 5 times every day and stuffed myself on good, typical bodybuilder food, sometimes I counted calories and ate 4000-4500 cal’s a day).

In the past two years my bench has gone from 315 to 565, dead went from 405 to 725, and my squat went from 495 to 740. I have Westside to thank for that. Also, bodyweight went from 210 to 290.

Pharrell?

I will also chime in on training partners. Find someone who is much stronger than you, and have them beat you up.

Combined with some crazy workouts, 6k calories/day and some drugs, my strength has SHOT up. I’m talking a 385 squat to a 585 squat, 400 dead to 600 dead. I would guess that half or more of that increase was due to being challanged, and breaking a mental barrier.

That’s some sick ass gains tho. Are those numbers all raw or is it going from raw to gear?

raw… I’m too lazy to learn how to use gear. Unless you count knee wraps, wrist wraps and a belt- gear.

I got off my ass and started doing the weights consistently almost 2 years ago. I quit eating like a pussy. I went from 180 pounds to about 220 without any noticeable gain in bodyfat. I hit bumps all the time, especially working and going to school full time, but I learned to adjust and look at the big picture.

Also, TAKE PICTURES!!! It’s amazing what a difference can exist between perceived progress and what visual evidence of your progress shows.

I was stuck at a mid-500s deadlift for about a year. During that time, my squat came around 180 lbs and my bench improved somewhat. I tried various technique and trainign ideas from some of the best pullers in my part of the country.

I tried different gear. Nothing seemed to make much difference. I had always been a stronger pulling conventional than sumo. Since I am tall and long-limbed, I assumed that this would always be the case for me.

This past summer, I pulled sumo for a few weeks- just for change really. I adopted kind of a narrow-stance technique that gave me good starting power without putting my hips to far from the bar.

Inside of 5 weeks, I got a painless 600 in a meet. Since then, I’ve hit a 625 (after sqaut workout no less), and I am shooting for a 650 or 661 in my next meet.

The moral to this story is this- when you are truely fucking stuck, try new something new and give it an honest effort. It took about 3 workouts before I got this sumo thing to work. Had I crapped out after the first workout- I would still be a 560 puller.
