How to Help Someone New to Deadlift

ok so i have a friend who “works out” that wants to deadlift. he doesnt squat, do rack pulls, and obviously doesnt DL.

he wants to do them TODAY, in like 2 hours.

i showed him rippetoe’s video on how to setup for the DL and gave him some basic advice.

?
Should he squat and do rack pulls in a workout before he tries DL or just let him try DL first?
I was leaning towards this so he can “get his legs under him” and maybe get a feel for the lift first.

if he can’t do 135 should i let him raise up 95 lbs or whatever he can do, to a normal height?

i really dont overly care how he does because i know he will quit at some point in the near future so i dont want to waste too much time on it, but i dont want to see the kid get hurt.

huh?

just make him go and do deadlifts.

you don’t get better at football by playing soccer. you get better by playing football.

I agree. Just make sure he is using proper form.

First off, find off which style he is going to use. hook grip, reverse, alternate grip. Than find out what hes better off at. Stronger legs = smaller stance, stronger upper body = larger/sumo stance. after that find out how tall he is for his in grip or wide grip. im around 5’9 and i use a midway sumo stance with wide grip/alternate grip. Or just whatever seems easier for him to do. than makes sure his legs and arms lift all at one time.

There is a strength forum you know. Bodybuilding isn’t the ‘default’ forum for any question mildly related to a gym or lifting weights.

ok thanks guys.

okay to raise up the bar to normal height if he has 25’s on there?

Deadlifting is a major part of bodybuilders… good luck finding a top competitor who hasnt deadlifted or doesnt deadlift at all.

Edit: also a person who doesnt have a big back or built back

Thousands of dumbasses beg to differ.

what do you mean by normal height? lockout position? if so straight arms maxed out

i mean height if the bar had 45’s.

Huh? If you think he can’t deadlift 135 then how the hell does he even put plates on a bar?

Make him deadlift.

oh, than just until the arms are straight and the bars against the body

christ i mean ELEVATE the bar to a normal STARTING HEIGHT (BB with 45’s) so hes not picking up a barbell with 25’s on it really low.

Thanks for the info buddy.

That has fuck all to do with learning how to do a deadlift or finding ways to get deadlift numbers up. Way to miss the point completely.

If I want to learn how to deadlift as much as possible I’m not going to ask a bodybuilder, I’m going to ask someone with a 700lb raw deadlift.

i would you can put 45s under the 25s… to make it normal height, although ive never seen a person deadlift 135 even with multiple tears…

How old is he? I think any normal human being 18 and over can very well pull 135 or more without any training, any less than that is just pretty weird or a complete pussy. Maybe there were more than 1 25 plate a side to increase the range of motion.

Edit: don’t mention my nipples.

Lol I was just typing up a reply saying that I should take back my statement because it wouldn’t be right to subject the people in there to this shit. It got a little mean so I deleted it.

OP
I think you are an asshole for wasting T-Nation’s collective time asking for help about someone who you know will quit. Go troll SAMA or something. (sorry PMPM)
