How Quickly can I Progress on the Snatch and C&J?

You remind me of myself a couple of months ago. I thought I was quite strong, I’d have people comment on how much I could squat & bench for my size but I was wrapped up in numbers: I wanted to DL 2.5 x BW, Squat 2 x BW, Bench 1.75 x BW and OHP 1 x BW. I thought if I reached these goals I could truly say I was strong!

I started OL about 2 months ago originaly just to learn how to powerclean without hurting myself. I had no idea I would enjoy it so much. Do you know what I saw there? A kid HALF my age squatting my PB, a kid of 17 squatting 180kg (not even a PB)!! It was then I realised how weak I was. You can walk around your gym looking at guys and thinking they’re strong but compared to the guys who train the oly lifts they aint shit!

When Glenn Pendlay gives you some advice you take it! Get to a club, get a coach and look at what you can acheive. Forget numbers (forget benching, your shoulders will thank you for it and let you snatch for longer) and realise that STRENGTH IS STRENGTH and you can get overall stronger by Snatching, Clean & Jerking and Squatting! Good luck.

Where abouts in England are you from?

The OP has no focus and wants to do everything but will do nothing…he has to decide on what he wants to do and make a f0cking move towards it. I see a lot of talk from people but not much dedication.

I wish I had discovered this at your age! 38 and giving it a go, just started this year after doing mostly casual type strength training exercises and a little PL style training.

Hows it going?

This guy competed on Sunday at a club comp, he was about 40’s or so. He was in the 77kg class. His son use to lift but his son doesn’t do it much, but he setup his own garage gym with bumpers and a small platform. He sees a coach every few weeks.

He Snatched 67 and C&J 95!

Koing

I’m a 42-year-old masters lifter. The neat thing about masters is you don’t need to get stronger - just keep your strength and get older! J/K

Listen to Koing and others. Do the lifts and squat - everything else will get strong. Seriously. I rarely do much else. Pull ups, because I think those are important. A “fun” ab exercise such as slamming a medicine ball. I do strict overhead presses and push presses because they help my shoulders feel good, but some OL coaches feel that jerks are enough to build overhead strength. This minimalist program has increased my bench press and DL without training those lifts at all. Your results may be different, but I can’t imagine the strength from squatting and doing the lifts wouldn’t have some carryover to the bench and DL.

The snatch depends a lot of your squat. If you had perfect technique and form you could get a 100kg snatch from a 125kg squat. it would look a little ugly but you would get it haha. it’s a matter of those two things. Squatting strenght and Technique.

What sort of a comment is the snatch depends a lot of your squat!!! wtf!!!

The Snatch is more technique dependent then anything else mate…

Koing

Yeah the snatch is ridiculous. Once you get heavier and heavier in your snatch, your technique has to be good for even a lift that is 80% of your max, because if it’s heavy enough, there is only so much you can do to compensate to make the lift. I learned this on Saturday since my Snatch is getting stronger and stronger, so now technique is more important than ever.

80, 110, and stalled. Still toiling away though.

80 to 100 isn’t impossible but it’s a chunk mate…do not under estimate how much focused training it will take to Snatch 100.

But if you train deligently you can get it. Theres no reason why you can’t but you’ll have to have pretty sharp technique or be beastily poweful! It’s also as your not 90kg+, your 75-78kg?

You mean my bodyweight? I’m about 73 kg right now. I know what you mean though, I can’t even imagine being able to do 100 right now. Hopefully I can manage a pr soon though.

Yeah, your bw. 73 and doing 80 is decent.

As long as you can front squat ~ 120kg for a triple that’ll give you enough to do 100 if your pull is solid and your fast under the bar.

Your plenty strong to Snatch 100kg mate.

Show a video of a max attempt. It’s more telling of how you lift when you miss a limit weight.

Also the fact that you probably don’t Olift 2x a week is probably killing your lifts…CNS improvement man!
