How Much Time Do You Spend at the Gym?

And there is a chain massage place downstairs … lol … not too soothing with deadlifts going on upstairs.

Thanks - I’ll let you all know how it goes!

I echo this 100%

I didn’t want to comment when you initially posted the picture, partly because commenting on anonymous women’s online photos is creepy, but also because I assumed plenty of other people would comment.

I appreciate the feedback. Compared to what’s out on the Internet, I didn’t think my photo would generate much noise anyway. Lol.

I lose weight quite quickly when I work out so I’m mostly interested in feedback related to how much muscle I’m able to build through this process. I have to admit that the eating part of this is tough. I love the constant state of energy but I feel sick from all this food sometimes.

Thanks kindly. : )

A couple of new questions (and apologies if these have been addressed in previous threads):

  1. Thoughts on soy and estrogen? (base for shakes, edamame)
  2. Purple K - a friend suggested it as a supplement and I’ve been taking small amounts daily. I don’t know if I notice any difference with/without it. I’m interested in knowing whether people take it on rest days?

Thanks!

Thanks for the input - I’ve noticed a marked difference when I up the intensity for sure.

Personally I avoid it like the plague. I definitely would not use a soy based protein shake.

Had to google PurpleK. I didn’t read all the fine print but it looks like expensive creatine to me.

If you not planning on competing I think you are overthinking this.

You say you are just starting out so I don’t think you need any supplements. I really like Metabolic Drive because it tastes incredible but it is certainly not necessary for to goals you have outlined.

Be consistent and eat decent food, it really is that simple. Unless you are planning to step on stage a lot of this extra worry is completely unnecessary.

There is no magic pill, no magic workout, no magic at all. It’s all about being smart and consistent.

Why do you avoid soy?

True, I may be overthinking things a bit. : )

I am going to buy a hex bar for home - any suggestions on brand or features?

That would be a long story, but bottom line is that too much of anything is still too much, and was consuming way too much and not even knowing it. My hormones were out of control and though I have no “proof” that the soy caused it, but things changed dramatically when I got away from it. I still use a little oil when I bake certain things that call for it, but very sparingly.

Thanks for the article. I’ll definitely read. Just wondering how old you are?

I just have a cheap trap bar from Amazon. I love it. I am not planning on moving 500lbs (just 300…lol) so it serves my purpose well. I did tape up the handles because it has some serious knurling on the handles.

I am 51

Awesome! You are in great shape for 51!

Thanks! I am still not where I want to be. so there’s that.

I highly recommend starting a training log here. So many helpful people. When I first started I didn’t have any real direction/goals. I was really weak and didn’t have a clue what I was doing. My journey has been a long roller coaster ride, but these people have helped through it every step of the way.

That’s a good thing. Keep chasing the future you. : )

I avoid it too, any thing that can mess with my hormones is out. I also have a few case of hormone depend breast cancer in my family, an other good reason to stay away from soy.

I don’t have too much to add that others haven’t already said. However a lot of people who spend a lot of time at the gym aren’t really working out much longer than some. They are talking to others, fiddling on their phone, etc. I’m not saying those things are necessarily bad merely that they are causing the time needed to finish what one wants to do to be extra long.

I’ve always timed rest periods and made them as short as possible. I pretty much never stop moving making all my rest somewhat active (even if it’s just walking). I can’t remember the last time I did straight sets of just one lift. Everything is supersets at the minimum. One benefit of a faster gym pace (at least for me) is it adds a cardio type aspect to the lifting.

It’s very possible you’re resting too long to begin with and unless you’re tracking it resting longer than you think.
