Yeah i took the high hard one with my insurance the first go around.
I donāt give you much of a chance. I have no idea how my parents felt about my quest for my best physique, and I didnāt bother asking them either. It sure wasnāt their choice.
After enough time, my parents started turning to ME for advice on eating and training.
@Mobc1990 curious questionā¦how old are you? Before i give my 2 cents . I want to make sure its age appropriate.
Between starting lifting in my 20ās and adding BJJ in my 40ās Iām easily in the high double to low triple thousands.
Gym dues for both Weight Gym and BJJ is ~$160 a month-ish
Probably $1-2k in BJJ gear (i have a rash guard addiction and like REALY nice Gis)
Supplements are ~$200 a month
Groceries and higher quality food add up over a short time
Couple of knee surgeries from BJJ injuries
Seminar fees and travel
BJJ instructional videos
Training books (5/3/1 ect)
Miscellaneous ego gear (BJJ/fitness themed apparel)
Ect, ect, ectā¦
As far as time, Iām currently in the weight gym ~4.5 hours a week and at BJJ for 5 hours or more.
While if you look at it over the totality, itās still a pretty small investment as compared to other more āMaterialā hobbies (cars, boats, sports fanaticism, ect)
Now, if you want to talk expensive hobbies ask me about my wifeās horsesā¦

Without question, over six figures.
As in āDarling equestrienne hobbyā or ādegenerate gambler at the racetrackā hobby?
Although, for some reason, gambling on horse racing is still seen as classyā¦but as soon as you go to DOG racingā¦
It hasnāt been costly for me in terms of money
As a student, my stipend covers a nice gym, gym was included in undergrad/HS tuition during the school year. I pay ~$400/year for gym during breaks
I recently decided to get coaching, which is $1k/6months. This is less money than my peers spend on their hobbies since most of them like to travel/go to concerts, own petsā¦
Supplements are minimal. $100/month for protein bars, $60 for a 3 month supply of casein, $40/year on magnesium and $30/ year on a multivitamin
I am very frugal and eat out once every 2 months, if that, + buy cheap groceries so even with supplement costs, I spend less than my peers do on food
I havenāt been injured yet, so Iāve probably saved thousands, if not 10s of thousands
The big āexpenseā is time. The combined amount of time I spend working out, thinking about fitness, listening to lifting related podcasts is more than I spend on most of my classes put together
LOL. Betting on horses would be cheaper!!
My wife has been riding horses since middle school. They lived at her parents place till we bough our compound and moved them to live with us. They were big pasture pets, as they were too old to ride.
After we lost her competition thoroughbred we boarded our last horse at a facility so he could have some friends. Wifey started riding again and got fired back up. Last March she bought a 5 year old OTTB and heās at the trainers for a month to get him ready for the season.

Lifting brought me out of a very dark place and made me a better person and father , people ask why I lift and the best answer I can give is Iām terrified not too .
34 years old.I workout because before I workout I had mental health issue and want to d*e.So working out is non negotiable unless I am injured.
Btw,friend what is your job/work?
I have spent remarkably little on an extensive collection of equipment.
-I have my first set of barbell and dumbbell + weightsā¦the 1" diameter bar type 110 lb set + four 25-pound plates (plastic cover over plaster) from the '70s
-People who had old weight sets but knew I lifted would give me their stuff when they wanted to reclaim space and realized they hadnāt exercised for a decade (or a kid graduated and moved away). So now I have permanent DBs at commonly used weights
-I got my first Oly set (300 lb) back before iron was expensive, so it cost like $135
-I bought a stronger Oly bar from a guy at work for around $50, and another guy sold me his 300 lb set for under $100 and threw in the bench, so now I have two
-I have a Cardioglide and exercycle that I rescued from the landfill thanks to people putting out stuff a couple days before garbage day. The electronic stuff is broken (time, distance, calories calculated) but the hardware works fine. I have a stepper that was redeemed with vouchers at work thanks to submitting suggestions
-I got a free Weider machine that had some flood damage, but for a couple hours using āWinkā to remove rust and lubing up the pulleys, I have a high/low pulley, leg press, and some other stations I donāt often use.
-A weight tree, cambered Oly bar, DB bars and better collars, landmine, special handles, exercise bands, etc., have all been Christmas, birthday and fatherās day presents. (My kids lifted from being multi-sport athletes in high school and a couple in college, so they have an idea of what Iād want.)
-I do pullups/chinups on my basement I-beam
-Iāve gotten a number of items used for a fourth their new priceā¦and theyāre usually ālike newā for the same reason gyms are crowded in January and February, then not crowded for 10 months.
Awh⦠i see your situation. Sorry that your having to deal with that.
Thank you in taking time out to answer.
far less than I spent on my rec drug, alcohol, happy hour journey.
Been doing this 34 years. That works out at 1768 weeks at around $15 a week gym fees, thatās $26,520 on just gym fees alone.
Add in equipment I have at home, gym accessories, magazines, dvds, books, couch fees, competition entry fees, travel to comps, supplements, physio costs, massages.
I would have to be at 6 figures for sure.
Your so dedicated,do you regret spending so much time and money working out?
Absolutely not. In terms of time. 90 mins 3-4 days a week in the gym is not a great deal of time. Even with some other shorter sessions outside of the gym. The total weekly time is probably 6 hours.
People play golf for 4 hours at a time, some people go fishing for a whole day, or go and watch football which takes 2-6 hours depending on what form of football you like.
I have made great friends through training and competing and as a dad of three , now enjoy being fitter and stronger than most other people my age.
Good for you then friend. Now you must stay injury free for your family
Couldnāt even hazard a guess as total financial cost of what Iāve spent especially if you include food. Only money I regret spending is on bullshit supplements when I was looking for a silver bullet and too impatient to respect the process. Best money Iāve ever spent is on my home gym which has cost me thousands of pounds.
But if youāre looking at fitness from a cost perspective best view it as an investment in yourself building a better you. Iād say that its probably helped me in my career, which has got absolutely nothing to do with physical performance.

Iād say that its probably helped me in my career, which has got absolutely nothing to do with physical performance.
I 100% agree with this. The best āpower suitā is fitness.
