I personally like heavy singles from very low pins. It makes me see stars when I’m near max and I feel like it is good dead lift assistance. I am, however, going to work in some Push style Zerchers just because.
I like Zercher Squats the way CT advocates they be done (ie from the floor). It does however, limit the weight that can be used for sure.

Damn good for an old dude (hell, even for a young dude)!

I read before if you place a 2x4 or 2x6 in the crook of your arm, that it helps spread out the load so it isn’t as uncomfortable on your elbow as without.
Having a buddy hit you on the back of the head with a 2X4 any time you think about this stupid exercise also helps.

Israeli airstrike on the innocent Zercher community.

My tips if you want 'em:
-
get super tight everywhere, just like you’re taught to do on other compound lifts
-
chalk up and interlock your fingers
-
squeeze the bar, don’t just let it hang there or you’re liable to turn it loose or even if you don’t and you’re thinking about it, it’ll screw with your concentration
-
go below parallel, elbows inside of thighs
-
pause and breathe at bottom of rep, there’s no other place in the exercise to properly do so on multiple rep sets
-
eyes up, push heels through floor like deadlifts
-
have goal of 2X BW for 1 RM
-
wear neoprene elbow sleeves and just use the bar, no tampon
Yes. I’ll take all the tips I can get. I got pretty close to 2x BW from low pins last year, but I’m just getting back into things for winter training. I took the summer off this year to focus on watersking. 2X BW sounds like a good goal for New Years.
because they are dumb.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with zerchers, but I’d much rather do back squat variations to help my back squat.
Justice’s way probably does have much better carryover to sumo deads.
And it could be worse, you could be getting good at a legitimately stupid exercise like glute bridges…

Yeah that’s really what I’m using them for. My back is kind of messed up right now so I figured that they’ll at least give the muscles involved with sumo pulling some type of work.
When I was playing around with some zerchers back when my deadlift recently got to its current apex, I was able to rep out 405 from a lower pin (slightly higher up right now to reduce shear), which I wasn’t able to do before. So I guess it’s somewhat of a proxy. If nothing else getting a stronger deadlift helps my zerchers, even if that doesn’t cut both ways, lol. Never stuck with them long enough to really ascertain.
