Say you had some condition which meant your spine couldn’t ever handle heavy compressive loads.
It has nothing to do with form or mobility - you have the flexibility of a contortionist.
How big could your legs/glutes get on a steady diet of rear foot elevated split squats, pistols, step ups, forward lunges, reverse lunges, slideboard reverse lunges, single leg romanian deadlifts, single leg hip thrusts, back extensions and natural glute-ham raises (these are bilateral but could be included because the spine is unloaded - unless you want to turn beast mode and do them single-legged of course)?
My friend who has been training for about two and a half years went from 19" to 28" legs doing almost exclusively smith machine split squats and leg curls/leg extensions. They are his strongest bodypart. I think they work just fine but it’s important to find a stable exercise - like the smith machine split squat - that isn’t limited by balance, like many free weight single leg exercises are.
For the past 8 weeks I haven’t been able to perform back squats or RDLs due to a lower back injury. I’ve since had to replace them with exercises such as split squats, leg curls, and leg extensions. I haven’t noticed a stoppage of growth (which I attribute to getting much stronger in these particular exercises), however, I don’t get that same awesome feeling of “holy shit I can’t walk up the stairs today.”
For me, I’ve noticed that I can totally annihilate my legs with 4 sets of back squats and 4 sets of RDLs, where I now have to do endless sets of split squats, leg extensions, and leg curls to get a similar effect. It sucks, but I guess you have to play the hand you’re dealt.
I find with the single leg movements its hard to hit the outside of the quad, single leg movements seems to demand more of the glutes and the inner quad/thighs (i dont know the names of each quad head). so might not get as good of quad sweep going on if you stickto single leg movements

Leg press?[/quote]
can be worse than squats, think about it, feet narrow, high up on the board, going down pretty far can really round the back, alot.

I lift yes
Why can’t you load up a prowler and drag it? Or push it?
You ever do it?
Do you even watch dexters lab?

Can’t imagine conditioning work putting any muscle in anyone except for the most untrained begginers.

You’re looking at it wrong man
Put 8pps on a prowler a drag 40 or so yards at that point it isn’t conditioning its a legs exercise…drag it backwatd for quads…pull forward for hams
I’m not saying put one plate on and do suicides
