High Rep Clean & Press the Ultimate Conditioning Exercise?

x3 on the leg drive. Clean and push press is more like it

.greg.

Is it a power clean, hanging power clean, or full clean. And is it a strict press, push press, push jerk, or jerk.

Why not just ditch all the restrictions. Pick the exercise, the weight, and the reps. Then start the clock.

Plus I doubt most people will hit 10 with 185. Thats pretty damn heavy when your doing any kind of fast paced conditioning.

^^True.

Its a clean from the floor.

Weight has to end up locked out over head.

The weight must touch the floor again to start the next rep.

Hands cannot leave the bar.

I think thats a pretty basic guidlines. Anything else that falls into that goes??? I might give this a try today at the gym… MIGHT

.greg.

Ok ^^^ sounds good, one last rule though: when the bar hits the ground, it has to go back up, any more than 3-4 seconds of catching your breath and that is the end of the lift. No sitting in the hang position for too long either, 3-4 seconds tops, then up you go. The videos won’t be too hard to judge…we will be able to tell what counts for what.

Whoever has their video entry first can start the thread.

I’ll try and have mine up by next Thursday. Is it weird that I’m already getting nervous about not getting 10 reps?

Definitely not, high rep CnJ/CnP are devastating at 135, I can’t imagine getting more than 8-10 with 185.

I’ll have mine next week as well, when my wrists heal up (boxing incident).

I dont mind letting someone rest in the hang position. Holding that weight is going to be tiring so thats not bad but I agree, no resting the bar on the floor for a long time. Yeah we’ll be able to tell on video whats good

.greg.

hahahah its not weird that you’re getting nervous… I don’t plan on getting 10 right away so I’m not nervous about it

.greg.

Good to know I’m not alone then, haha. Also, I wouldn’t ā€œdisqualifyā€ someone if they rested in the hang for a bit though I certainly won’t be doing 'cause it would blow me out. My strategy is gonna be to go as fast as possible so I don’t have too much time to think about how much it sucks.

I have short stubby fingers. So double pronated grip is gonna be a bitch for me; I’m glad we decided on regripping the bar.

That would’ve been way more hardcore. I mean, how many guys are secure enought to admit they had a botox accident? That’s a tough dude…

lmfao, nahh I banged my wrists up in my first boxing class trying to be a tough guy, I genuinely cannot CnP without excruciating pain, im giving it a week. The pain is in the brachioradialis (outer part of the forearm) and its merciless. If anyone has any tips lemme kno. I dont care to post this in the injuries section, ill get a bunch of responses that I wont understand with solutions I certainly wont do.

Fuck this workout lol. I tried it at the end of my workout today and only got 4 reps then said screw it. I think the worst part is my overhead press because I dont really do it after my shoulder surgery… I need to work on my ā€œheavyā€ cleans!!!

lmao! So you’re saying we should drop it to 135? I think 185 is a bit high for high rep CnP, how many people can even do 225 for 1 let alone 185 for 10?

Just to throw in my two cents… back in the day, the two-dumbbell clean and press was actually one of the most common ā€œconditioningā€ exercises.

Sig Klein said that any man who could clean and press two 75’ers for 12 reps was an undeniable strong man.

Reg Park said he could use 100’s for reps without a warm-up.

Strongman and deadlifting phenom Herman Goerner would start most workouts with ā€œthe chainā€ - a swing/snatch-press-curl-press complex with kettlebells for one or two reps each, running the rack from about 28 pounds up to 115 pounds.

And let’s not forget possibly my favorite Dan John quote of all time: ā€œIf all you did was clean and press, you could be awesome.ā€

So to answer the question, yes, the high rep clean and press is quite possibly the ultimate conditioning exercise.

I could probably get 225x1 but the press (even a severe push press) would be extremely difficult for me cause of my shoulder. I dont think 185 is going to be very ā€œhigh repā€ unless you do oly lifts regularly… Which I definitely do not.

Is that a vote to have the weight lowered to 135? Because that sounds good for me! I did my attempt today prematurely, I got 3 reps lmao… :frowning:

Wow, glad to see people being honest and not inflating their internet numbers. I weigh right around 200 and I’d be STOKED if I got 185X10 lol Hell, I’ll be happy with 5. I’ll see if I can get someone to video me in the next week or two.

Haven’t cleaned in about a month, but got 225 for a deuce last time out. All time best is 225x3 for pushpresses, but that was taking it from the rack, not cleaning it between pushes. Gonna do some cleans tomorrow, and might try a feeler set at 185 to get a guage on what my number would be when fresh. If it’s really gay then I’ll vote for 135, haha.
