Hernia

Hey guys, I recently was blessed with an emergency removal of my apendics(even if I can’t spell it right). Anyway, when the doc had me cut open he said he noticed a very small hernia, and that it’s not something I need to worry about, but may be something I need to worry about in years to come. Could anyone explain to me the consequences of a hernia? Pre and Post operation?

Thanks!

A hernia is basically a tear in the abdominal wall. A small tear isn’t a big deal, but if it grows, the intestines can pop through this tear and possibly become pinched. Rather painful, but can be repaired (I’m surprised they didn’t do it anyway, since they already had you opened up – but then again I’m no expert on the medical field).

I had a hernia right above my pubic bone when I was about 15 or 16. I carried it for a couple years before I got it fixed, but this was before I started lifting. Basically, if you don’t get it fixed, the tear in your abdominal wall can get bigger whenever you do heavy lifting. It never caused me any pain, but I could see my viscera poking out through my abdominal wall. Since I’ve had it fixed, I haven’t had any problems with heavy lifting, and I just hit a 525 squat and 550 dead in a powerlifting meet.
