This is the first post I’ve made on the over 35 section. I’ve been around this site since the beginning but I dont post much because of time. I do manage to lurke enough though. Years ago Staley wrote an article on how to warm up. It was a great article. Cressey’s warm up in “Inside Out” was also quite helpful.
I’m almost 39 and I joke with guys that I have to warm up to “warm up”. I’ve noticed that turkish get ups and bent or side presses really help my shoulders to warm up. Have any of you stumbled on anything different that helped?
Diesel Crews Shoulder protocol works pretty good. though I don’t usually warm up much beyond working some light weights for a couple of sets on the movement I’m going to do.

Ditto. I just try to get the blood flowing into the muscle group I’m going to work. You can get a good sense for warm up routines by looking at training logs.
I like Cressey’s warmup from the book maximum strength. I’m 39 also and have tried a lot of warm up routines. I do a lot of post work out strecthing since I started with this damn shoulder pain and it feels much better. Good luck.

Thanks for your responses. I notice the aches and pains last longer than they used to. Then again, someone once said “a little pain lets you know you’re alive”.Train Hard
If your going to buy into that “39 is the start of the end” idea, I’d say just take a nap. Otherwise, the guys gave some good advice. You can’t go wrong if you follow SkidM, that’s him in his avatar (I’m the little guy about to bite his ankle).
Welcome.
No, I dont think this is the beginning of the end. I do like naps though. I guess what I’m trying to say is that when I learned to side press I had an “aha” moment. I didnt realize it would feel so good. I was wondering if any of you tried an odd lift that turned out to be something that really helped you. The “no money with band” felt really good today too, but I knew it would from watching the vid.
I seem to be becoming the over 35 stretch/mobility/prehab dude.
Im 37 but a little banged up from life, work and college athletics, so I need to warm up more then most of these guys I also like to keep my flexibility/mobility high but thats me.
Find what works for you, I do a dynamic/mobility warm up that includes some/most or all of the following depends on time or what Im doing that day how I feel ect.
foam rolling
hip mobility
more hip IT band junk
shoulder warmup/mobility
shoulder dislocates a must for me
I do a ton of different kinds of walking lunges , to the side, hands over head, face to shin…
so I need to do allot for me to be warm.
a few light sets dont really work for me.
For everything I start light and do lots of sets with often just 1-2 reps until I get to work weights, especially with squats, can start my sets on an empty bar and finsh with 300lbs plus, but have found I have issues from time to time hanging over from previous workouts and if my knees shoulders, ache or hurt it is better to feel that bit of a message with light weights easily controlled than when the weights are being pushed hard. Don’t know if it has helped much but all my injury concerns are from 30 years ago, got no knew ones in quite a while.
I am 44 and like to use Clubbells for warming up. Scott Sonnon has alot of info about these. Call to Order, Shield Cast and Pendulum are good. The basically warm up my shoulders and most of my upper body. I hope this helps!
