Help w/ Muscle Mass Program

I’m a 19 year old Basketball Player, i stand 6’4 and a lean 180lbs. My longterm goal is to get to at least 200lbs in 8 months and my short term to get to at least 185lbs in 8 weeks. I need a program that i can which can help me to my goal. But i do have some limitations. I don’t have gym access and only have a free weights set at home. barbell, dumbells and plates.

What workout could i do to imcrease size in a fair amount of time. But i do have lots of free time and can workout any time.any help would be appreciated.

Do you have any performance objectives?

Try Joe DeFranco’s westside for skinny bastards. I’m currently doing this program and it is pretty fun and simple.

I’ve just finished a cycle of German Volume Training…relatively low weights, high volume and short rest periods. I liked it…it forces you to do a lot of work in a short space of time. You’ll find articles on it in Poliquin’s archives

Hey there, I am an ex-professional basketball player (Germany) and now I currently work (accountant) and train (I will be heading back in a couple years for good… Finland). I played college ball at Stetson University and was thin and desperately needed weight.(6’8" 210 lbs) My coaches tried all they could, but ectomorphs (what you are and I was) find it difficult to put on mass. I’ve found certain workouts, through trial and error, that have really added mass and could help you out a great deal. (BTW I am now 256 lbs.)

Before anything I have a couple questions for you though. First, why can’t you get to a gym? If you are currently in college (at 19 you should be if you’re any good) there is a gym at your disposal. If not what about your high school? The second question is this is your limitation monetarily imposed or have you just never signed up for a gym and don’t feel like it? The Y is cheap and always at your disposal (and if you can’t financially do it THEY’LL HELP!) Also, a lot of smaller “Mom and Pop” gyms (one’s that you should enjoy better anyway cause they lack “certain distractions”) will work with college or college aged kids.

If you can answer those questions honestly send me a message through this site… I’ll give you everything I know…

You’re not “lean.” You’re skinny. The first step is to stop usign euphemisms and honestly assess where you are.

Please post the entries for the last 3 days in your food diary. Once we see what you’ve been eating, we’ll know how you need to train.

I’ve never met anyone who ate properly who hard trouble gaining weight. I’ll bet you eat less than 2,000 cals a day.

My current situation. I am actually from London, England. I am currently In Florida (Port St Lucie) working out with Coaches trying to aquire and athletic scholarship. But i’ll be leaving Florida in 7 weeks time to return to england to work for a while so i can return here to study in a junior college.

The reason i don’t have access to a gym, is because i have noone to take me there and it isn’t possible for me to walk to where the gym is an no buses run around this area. but i do have enough weights to do a workout in my garage, because i purchased 2 seperate weight sets, i just lack the program i need to get bigger. My diet honestly hasn’t been good this week. The main area i do lack knowledge is in the dietary area. The saying knowledge is power has provoked me to do more rearch, but every website tells me something different. Although i was recently reading some articles on this website and it seems to be the most accurate to the rest of them,so that’s why i joined. Yes i am very skinny (actually can someone explain to me what lean is, because ive taken various B.M.I tests etc, and it always calculates me as a lean frame. I don’t know though, you guys most certainly have more knowledge than i. I am humble and ready to learn and grow in muscle size. Any efforts would be helpful. Thanks.

Honestly, I don’t think you really need to gain all that much weight. A lot of guys on here will get on your for being skinny, but you’re a basketball player, not a bodybuilder. Every pound you gain is a pound you have to carry up and down the court all night. You might need to bulk up to 190-200 lbs, but that’s all. Any more weight would just serve to slow you down.

Instead of focusing on putting on weight, work on getting stronger. In fact, go to this site:

and read everthing on the site. This should get you to where you need to be. The performance articles will help you train, and the BB articles will help you bulk up a bit.
Good luck.

Yea, one thing i have noticed is, when i am not actually playing basketball because of rest or injury i have no problem gaining weight.

I think it could be because im so active. I do wan to get to a solid 200lbs and maintain that andything else above that is a bonus. I’ll check out that site right now. Thanks.

I have a couple workouts that are already set up on Excel Spreadsheets that will work for basketball specific weight and conditioning training… If you are in Port St. Lucie, Florida (I am assuming you attend Indian River CC) and you are serious… I’m in West Palm, we can work some situation out where I can help you.

I know how hard it is to gain (and with only limited weights it makes it a bit different… but it can be done). Remeber dedication is the key to success… in basketball and in life…

RJ it is important for him to gain weight… If he doesn’t he will not survive in college basketball… High School and JuCo’s are one thing… College Basketball is a whole different beast… You can be a top notch player and if you don’t have size you won’t be effective at all unless you are a point guard or 2 guard… What many don’t realize is that the game of basketball is one of the most physically demanding sports around… If a 6’4" 180 lb athlete goes up for a layup on a 260 lb 6’8" center (which happens regularly) he will not get a shot off… if a 6’4" 200 lb athlete who has strength (both core and physical) he will not only get his shot off, but score on a consistent basis…

I actually disagree here. Getting overweight would hurt a basketball player, but putting on muscle when you are very underweight will do nothing but help. He could probably increase his vertical from strenght gains even after increasing his weight.

Shorter, stronger guys can post and block out tall thin guys- it happened to me all the time when I played a lot.

Exactly Martin… Exactly… I’m glad a shorter guy replied to this as well (so there is a more rounded opinion – sometimes guys see my height and say “Obviously you need the weight… but not smaller guys.”)

Strength and “good weight” is one of the most important aspects to basketball, even the great natural athletes find out that it’s needed (eventually).

Jordan, Pippen and Harper, for example, became truly dominant when they began their “breakfast sessions”.

Yea, i agree totally, there was definetley as big transition between Juco and major college leagues. most 6’4 college guys are at least a solid 200-210lbs and even though i am talented and have great fundementals none of thar matters if the strength isn’t there. Ive noticed on many 0ccasion that even if im better than a player if i am completley outmatched by strength it’s a tough night for me. The only reason i can hang most of the time is not because i’m srong, but because im tough. But that toughness won’t mean a thing at the next level UNLESS i have the size to go with it. I will PM you.
