I’m starting 40-50 lb bulk in a few weeks(had to stop a few month ago due to exams and all that) and I’m wondering what the hell I’m going to do when I reach my goal.
Say I’m 6’'1 and 170lbs now, and I get to a nice 210/220 lbs(a lot to go for I know) what the hell do I do to maintain this muscle? Do I eat and lift as much? Do I continue to increase the weight of what I am lifting? I’m going to be on Whey Protien so will I keep taking that?
Any useful info and/or links are much appreciated
Now this is a very nOOB question but it does have me wondering…
During my bulk I’m gonna do a 20-25 min jog after working out. The problem is, straight after lifting, I usually eat stuff like Oats, Eggs, Milk, and protein shakes with peanut butter and various other types of heavy foods thrown in. I’d fell like shit and puke all that crap up if I went running with that in me…
So should I run before lifting, 'cos that would really tire me out and I wouldn’t be able to do a decent workout then…
Ok guys, any serious answers and/or links are much appreciated…
Don’t run before lifting. Prioritize…lifting is #1 and nothing should take away from that. If you go running then you’ll drain your energy and won’t be able to lift as much.
My advice is to keep it simple and not overthink things too much. I will address your post in 2 parts.
The Bulk
Given the fact you have 40-50 lbs worth of bulking you are seeking to do (and at your height, you could probably do even more, but first things first), it is not going to happen overnight. I would really “worry” about that issue when you get there. Quite frankly, if you get yourself up to 220 lbs, you will have likely gained a lot of first hand experience with what is working for you anyway and you cannot underestimate that. It sounds funny, but I think you will have a pretty good idea of what to do when you get there. And yes, still taking whey protein would be perfectly appropriate then too.
Running
Couple of thoughts. First, a lot of people completely cut out cardio during bulking and will give you that advice. If you are completely hell-bent on bulking, you might consider that. Me, I would never cut out totaly cardio since that is an important component of your general health.
Second, I would either split out the running/cardio to non-lifting days or if you simply HAD to do both on the same day, doing it AFTER lifting - never before. And definitely don’t do it on heavy leg days - you will be hating life.
Finally, if you do run after lifting, just have your shake then. Squeezing in a shake in-between would certainly make you ill. You might want to just think about taking some BCAA’s in between if your budget allows for it.
Yeah I didn’t want to cut cardio out completely but if I had to it wouldn’t bother me that much, I’ll probably just go for a light jog on my rest days…
