Headache - Squats

I recently started a new training program after a couple year hiatus. I’ve been developing a routine for about 3 weeks now and been starting most sessions with Squats (after warmup) 4 sets 8 to 10 reps while trying to break in my joints, ligaments etc…

The last few times, during my first set I get this intense headache that seems to originate at the base of my skull and radiate througout.
The pain is fairly intense and is accompanied by a lightheaded dizzy feeling. The pain somewhat dissipates between sets, althoguh not completely, but comes back intensly during the next set and on subsequent lifts.

The next morning feels like I drank a gallon of booze my head hurts so bad and this seems to last for at least a day if not two and the pain is elevated by sudden movement or increased physical activity.
sex, cardio etc…

If it was just a temporary thing I wouldn’t even question it but the fact that it lingers with me is what is bothersome.

What is going on here? Should I be wearing some type of brace? Is it a problem with my form or breathing? Am I aggrivating an old injury?
Thoughts?

I had that happen when I first started doing deads. I was simply not breathing correctly, holding my breath too long. Since I learned how to breathe properly during the lift, I haven’t had any problems.

Just a guess though.

howdy matey

well i used to get a wicked headache aswell… after orgasm (lol) only happened once though but it scared the shit out of me, i googled it and look below to read; however there are some GP thoughts of what it could be…

Hi guys! I have also had these sex-headaches before. As I don??t like hurting and not knowing what is going on, the second time it happened I went straight to a doc??s office. I wanted to have that checked to see if there has come to a brain damage (or whatever).

A GP sent me to a neurologist. I had an ultrasound performed to see if there were any brain bleed. Luckily there wasn??t and the doc then explained that the cause of my after sex headaches is benign. It is not known how long they will last but they will certainly stop on their own-that was what he told me. He also told me to refrain from sex and masturbation for a few weeks and see what will happen. He also told me to try to cut down all stressful situations and to come back for medications and another checked if headaches persisted. However, they haven??t.

I hope the same thing will happen with you too.

Oh, before I forget, he did tell me about these other headaches-actually a headache that strikes and hurts like crazy. He described it as an acute, while those that I had ( and you ) are persistent. He said that such headaches usually represent an acute brain hemorrhage or something else serious and are an emergency. That is why he ordered an ultrasound in the first place. So, I suppose that every such headache should be checked.

Maybe you lack GPP. Condition yourself for squats.

Maybe but it seems to start in a specific location. I tried again last night and relaxing my neck and shoulder seemed to help a bit but the headache still came on and is kicking my ass today. I’m going to schedule a Dr appt just to check it out but if I know my Dr. he’ll just say I’m a healthy young man and nothing is wrong with me like he did when I tore my shoulder and when I broke my clavicle etc…

I really need to get a new doc. I’m leaning toward some type of musculature injury in my neck that is somehow messing with a nerve or blood flow. All I know is I am not looking forward to running on the mill tonight :frowning:

A search for “headache” on the forums brought up threads with people with similar problems. I actually had this happen to me last week, but foam rolling and taking a couple of days off seems to have fixed it for me.

While doing a headstand, no less. Seriously though, I rolled my back and it made a huge difference. I’ve also set up an appointment for a massage. It seems to have worked for UtahLama and some of the other posters who had similar problems.

When you say back do you mean upper back by the neck? Should be obvious, huh. I’m sure a massage would do the trick.

lol funniest thing I’ve read all day!

Just an update. The headaches continued and I went to the Dr. I know the guy thinks I’m a hypocondriac but I wanted answers anyways. He ordered a CT scan and the results came back normal. The headaches started coming on during sex and one hit me really hard after a long chase involving my dog, some chickens, a large cliff, trailer park and a river.
Needless to say I didn’t do any cardio for several days following.
After that incident they seem to have lessened, I still feel the start of them now and again and usually I’ll just pop a single Advil as a precaution and that’s where it ends. I plan to watch my blood pressure a bit closer but I think it may just have been the fact that I was really out of shape from being away from the weighs for too long. I’m just powering through and things seem to be getting better.

Thanks!

drink more water
breathe better. take a really deep breath every time you do a squat.
go down into the squat, when you go back up dont exhale, instead make an exhale that reminds of karate/barbarians yelling.

thats the 2 main things for me. also gpp can be it. i took 3 weeks off during christmas, when i came back i was really dizzy really easily with deadlifts, squats… etc. now i get much less.

for me all those things are usually gpp, not enough water or improper breathing

btw im not kidding about the karate/barbarian yelling hahaha. maybe its just cause im a newb, but if i do it, i guess i exhale better, and im able to lift weight that otherwise couldnt AND i dont get light headed/dizzy/headaches.

oh i also forgot, it could be lack of food or too much food before workout.

if i eat too much, it takes a while for me to digest so it really doesnt help. makes me wanna puke. if i dont eat i could get headaches, dizzyness etc…
