Bench didn’t feel good today or last time either. I think I need to experiment a little bit with a closer grip. My grip right now is ring finger on, which isn’t crazy wide, but I think a closer grip may help my elbow positioning. You can see it incredibly clearly on that last 300 paused video I put up. My elbows actually flare out behind the bar at the bottom and whip up into it to push it off my chest. Nobody does this. If this were a good idea I probably wouldn’t be the only one doing it and I’d probably have a better bench lol. If anything it should be a bit opposite where your elbows are in front of the bar just a little at the bottom.
Anyway I’m going to bring my hands in and see how things go. Traditionally my close grip (inch outside the smooth, so very close) has only been about 10lbs less than my comp grip anyway lol. I’m probably not going to end up quite that close, but we’ll see.
Squat (beltless):
45 10x
135 5x
185 5x
225 5x
285 2x rest 1 min
285 4x rest 1 min
285 6x rest 2 min
285 7x rest 2 min
285 5x rest 2 min
285 3x
Paused Bench: my grip is now thumb’s length from the smooth
45 10x
95 10x
135 10x
185 5x
225 5x
245 3x
285 2x
285 2x
285 2x
285 2x
285 2x
285 2x
265 4x
265 4x
265 4x
Bench TnG:
225 15x
I’ll upload a vid later. I had some trouble with my butt coming up, but I think I’ve got it all figured out. The closer grip didn’t feel any weaker. I’m not sure it felt any stronger either, but we’ll see. It felt better on my shoulder so if nothing else that’s okay.
That’s pretty narrow, I’m not sure how tall you are but at 6’1’’ I will only go as narrow as pinky on the rings for bench. You’ll wind up with some big ass triceps pressing that way though!

I’m only like 5’9" and maybe a half or something. Not sure if it’s “tricep dominance” or just limb lengths and biomechanics or whatever, but close grip has always felt pretty strong for me. I think the fastest, strongest paused rep of 315 I’ve ever done was with a grip only an inch outside the smooth.

My normal bench grip is with the knuckle of my thumb on the smooth portion. The only time I move my hands out is if I am having discomfort or looking for variation. The farthest out I have ever benched is thumb’s length. I honestly think that there isn’t much difference in strength for me either. It just feels better some days than others.
Here’s the video of my bench training. It’s just the 6 doubles at 285.
You can see that by the end I got to where I could do both reps without booty poppin. The key is, after I get everything set, to push myself down the bench as far as I can without moving my feet which forces my knees even farther below my hips. Once I do that it seems to be a pretty safe bet that my ass won’t come up.
Deadlift w/ pause at the knee (beltless):
135 5x
225 3x
275 3x
315 3x
405 2x
405 2x
405 4x held the last pause at the knee for a good 5 seconds
Block Pulls (beltless):
475 1x
475 1x
475 1x
Paused Bench: (still using thumbs away from the smooth grip)
45 5x
135 5x
185 5x
225 5x
275 2x
315 2x
285 2x
285 2x
285 2x
225 5x paused each rep for 5 full seconds on my chest

My favorite is that, for whatever reason, the personal trainers decided the new best thing was to do the battle ropes with an underhanded grip. So now it just looks like they’re violently jerking the ropes off.

There is always some seriously crazy shit going on at your gym lol. I’d love to train there just so I could be entertained between sets.
