Man, this thread was sure to be a firestarter, huh?
I tend not to frequent the newbie threads where 140-pounders ask if they should bulk or cut, or whether they’ll get huger on Alpha Male or ZMA, so I haven’t been witness lately to how people do or don’t treat the newbies, so I can’t claim any expertise in that area.
With regard to a general tone of negativity, however, the original poster has a point to a degree. It’s probably not completely avoidable on any Internet forum, but it sometimes does exist here.
It doesn’t come from the solid core group of posters who’ve been here a while and have always acted like mature, intelligent, cool, knowledgable individuals (and they’re the main reason I spend time on these forums), but from the occasional random jerkoff with no adult-level social skills.
It never ceases to amaze me that someone who does not know you and in some cases has NEVER even communicated with you before, even on these forums, will sometimes jump in and belligerently begin making personal attacks on you in a manner last seen when I was in about the seventh grade.
If you don’t know a person, have never spoken to or communicated with them before . . . you might disagree with their opinion, point of view or observation, so feel free to argue against that point that they’re making in a forum until you’re blue in the face. Have it at.
There’s nothing better than good debate, and good banter. BUT, stick to arguing the POINT that’s being discussed – don’t haul off and attack the INDIVIDUAL making the point, who you know almost ZERO about, and say things like, “I guess you feel that way because you must (totally suck in XYZ way, huh?) you puss!” or something to that net effect.
I read some of this shit, not even when it’s directed at me personally, but when it’s directed at other posters who were perfectly innocently going about their business discussing something and then someone jumps in way out of left field and starts personally attacking them like an adolescent pit bull on crack, and I sometimes feel the need to jump in, whether I know/like the original poster or not.
I might not even agree with them. But sometimes the random attacker needs to be told to shut the fuck up and not come back until they reach the maturity level of at LEAST a 17-year-old.
Some people just need to learn to behave like they’re not on a fucking junior high school playground. The occasional really random personal attacks do sometimes poison the place. Not enough to outweigh the good here, but they can indeed be a pain in the fucking nuts.[/quote]
Well put D.
