1370 total with an injured hammie is unreal. I amazed you got that 500 pull.
Great job and heal up soon.
Great job GV! That sucks about the Hammy.
Question: Have you figured out why it popped?
And you got to weigh in a day prior, really?
Thanks OP and Rick. Yeah we got to weigh in a day early. You always have the opportunity in Raw United meets to weigh in the day before the meet. I think they do it because it saves time and nerves the day of the meet. I would have made weight easily anyway.
I’m not sure why my right hamstring popped but several factors could have been the reason in isolation or working together. Walking the weight out for the attempt was bungled and I had to readjust my feet several times before getting set (hopping around with 605 lbs on your back is not a good thing), I could not seem to find a comfortable bar placement on my back, the lifting platform was carpet or some odd material that I wasn’t accustomed to, I went to deep, to fast, and maybe I was dehydrated. All these things could have been a factor or maybe a gremlin tickled me and I just had an athletic injury. I’m not sure. All I know is I can’t even sit on my right glute or upper thigh. I will recover and come back.
great work.
Very good job GV! To be able to pull 500 with a messed up hammy and max effort squats before is a true show of perseverance and fortitude. We both realize that injuries and this sport go together like PB&J. Its so hard to explain to people who don’t enjoy lifting weight why we do what we do, but your showing epitomizes the heart and love you have to have for this sport.
Thanks Matty, it is hard to explain to many people who just shrug and wonder why it is we put so much effort in to lifting so much when we could just sit back and watch soap operas all day and sit around getting fat. Hey, if I’m going to get fat (trying not to) I’m going to be damn strong.
Hey GV. I was on a business trip the past several days and just got a chance to read your meet write up. Eerily similar to my last meet, injured on last attempt of first lift and having to gut it out through the other lifts.
Good job in getting through it and at least you got a post surgery bench PR out of it. Hope the hamstring is recovering.
Thanks Dave. I’m applying a lot of rest, ice, compression, and some elevation(RICE) so hopefully recovery will be finished soon. What a pain in the ass(literally) this has been. Also, I’ve been doing some very light stretching and doing household chores as well as being 1/2 speed active with my 3 year old and 4 month old. I feel crappy not doing anything so taking out the trash, filling the pool, feeding the baby, tossing the ball, and some other light duty are all I have been managing.
My big challenge is to go back to work tomorrow which will involve a lot of waking and usual work outside. My lawnmower is in the shop until tomorrow which has been a very convenient reason(excuse) for me to take today off and heal up. I’ll be wearing compression shorts but I know the fun will be evident and throbbing pain all day long. If I’m lucky I’ll take an epson salt bath and recovery will be accelerated. I want to begin training again by Wednesday or Thursday so the hell with this hammy and I’m giving it notice to be ready to work this week.
Congratulations on the meet. You are iron.
Did the hamstring bruise up? For me when I bruise I know I’m in trouble, if I don’t it comes back pretty quick. I ended up buying a electro-muscular stimulator for when I pull a muscle, and it seems to speed up the healing.
Thanks corrmhona, I’m going to have to look into getting an electro-muscular stimulator. I had a little bruising but for the most part, after extensive icing(with a bag of peas), for 20-25 minutes at a time, naproxen a couple times a day, and light stretching my hammy is beginning to have less tension and pain. Definitely not over with the pull and strain but I’m much more functional.
Forgot to mention I’ve upped my daily intake of GABA for nerve and muscle relaxation and have used more tumeric for the same purposes.
A few days out from the meet and my right hammy has made considerable progress in healing from Saturday’s strain or pull. I’m going to work this morning and there remains a ball of tightness in my thigh. Today will be very physical with a lot of walking and carrying 12-15 lbs implements around as well as a 25 lbs backpack blower for distances, normal work. My challenge is before me, to make it through today and treat my right hammy to some therapy tonight.

A good, deep tissue massage may do you wonders. I’ve always liked to get a deep-tissue massage every 60-90 days. As the meet draws near I do a deep tissue 30 days out, 10 days out and a leg flush @ 3 days out. My hips feel great and almost have that new car smell.

Where do you find someone qualified to do this work?
Hey GV! Sorry about the hammy but good work pushing through it! Keep at it brother!
All things considered, you did an amazing job pushing through the injury, GV. Nice work! Hopefully that hammy will recover quick.
sen say-I get deep tissue work at massage envy. They are not sports deep tissue experts but I have had some good work done there. Thanks for the props.
Wiex-Thanks, these sports injuries are annoying bumps in the road-damn hammy better shape up and get right.
So, today was hell on my right hammy. Felt like I had a painful knot pulsing with tension for the entire work day. Well, after a rest the hammy felt a little better so I decided to lift and see if that would help or just feel good to get back in the swing of things. Starting light seemed the best thing to do.
Kettebell Swings:
25 lbs x 20
T-Handle Swings:
100 lbs x 20 reps
Close Stance Squats(A slight bit narrower than shoulder stance):
135 x 10
225 x 5
315 x 3 (Hammy aching after this set so I spit in hammies face)
405 x 3 (Ass to calves-felt good)
Strict Standing Presses:
35 lbs dumbells neutral grip x 10
135 (Bar) x 3
135 x 6
155 x 3 sets x 3 reps
Close Grip Bench Press:
135 x 10
185 x 3
225 x 3 sets x 3 reps (Last set paused all reps)
Standing Crunches:
80 lbs x 20 reps
Farmers Walk:
35 lbs dumbells(each hand) x 300 yards (No set downs or drops)
Nothing I have done has loosened up my right hammy like this lifting session. I have some tightness developing now and I will do some ice and probably wrap my leg later. I’m happy that I may be able to train this strain away with deliberate, measured lifting and therapy. Onwards and Upwards.
Nice GV, glad to hear that. That’s one long ass farmers walk. I remember when I bought my 35’s and my wife (girlfriend at the time) was like “Do you want a cart”. Being a manly boy that I was, my response was “Nah, I got this”. By the time I got halfway through the store I saw an abandoned cart and said “I should probably take this upfront with the other carts. It’s rude to leave it here” as sweat was dripping down my face.
Wiex, at least you got a good sweat out of it. I wonder if your girlfriend(wife) caught on or thought, “That’s very conscientious of him.”

Can I just say don’t try this stuff by yourself if you don’t know what you are doing. I attempted a home leg flush once and if it weren’t for the quick actions of my wife, who managed to extricate my foot from the bowl before it went completely around the U-bend, I could have been seriously injured. As it was, it took several washes to get the smell of Toilet Duck out of my gym clothes.
Fortunately all I lost was a shoe, but it could have been so much worse.
300 yards on the farmers walk is awesome. I’ve been using 55 pound dumbbells. On the surface it seems easy. I found it makes a man out you real fast.
