300 yards on the farmers walk is awesome. I’ve been using 55 pound dumbbells. On the surface it seems easy. I found it makes a man out you real fast.

FarmerBrett-I don’t really know what a leg flush means but it sounds hilarious.

Crippler-I have to agree these walks are killers. The first half of the walk everything is fine then as I’m about 3/4 of the way from the end the grip and forearms are aching, then the traps are beginning to tell me to “Screw off”, finally the entire body is yelling at me,
“Are we there Yet!”, and I put the dumbbells down my whole being is a sigh of relief. I think I had it too easy so I’ll be going for thick grip dumbbells next time and increase the weight to 41 or 46 lbs for 300 yards and no straps again. I need the challenge and I feel like an awesome ogre while I’m doing it. I hope the people in cars passing by think I’m nuts or some kind of freak walking around with weights in my hands and my face most likely scrunched up in a snarl. Maybe I’ll get lucky too and some neighbor will be spying from a window thinking, “This guy lost his marbles.”

LOL, that’s too funny GV. I could totally picture the cleavers spying out their window with the look of horror on their faces.

How’s the hammy holding up?

I would do farmer walks in a robe and sandals…then it would perfect!

Matty-I could do a Moses impersonation from the ten commandments movie but with the dumbbells in my hands.

Tonight I stuck with a kind of easy 1-week after the competition lifting session. Wiex, the right hammy is still aching but much less than a few days ago. The knot in my biceps femoris is not nice but it know it has limited time left to pain me.

T-Handle Swings:
100 lbs x 2 sets x 20 reps

Narrow Stance(just less than shoulder width) Squats:
135 x 10
225 x 5
315 x 3
405 x 3

Strict Standing Overhead Presses:
35 lbs Dumbbells x 10
135 x 2 x 6
160 x 3 x 3

Close Grip Bench Press:
135 x 10
185 x 3
235 x 3 x 3(Last set paused reps)

Standing Crunches:
80 lbs x 20

Right hammy was a bit angry with me for going to 405 again on the squats but the result was a much looser hammy. Overall, I felt strong and did an intense lifting in about 40 minutes.

Couldn’t do a farmer’s walk due to the lightening/thunder storm here, I didn’t feel like being a walking, dumbbell, target for an angry bolt.

LMFAO

GV, probably a good idea to stay out of the storm. You may have pissed off one of the gods with talk about impersonating Mosses!

405 squat is still a dream for me. Nice work! Glad to hear the hammy is loosening up with some work. I had to look up biceps femoris, it’s not where I thought it was lol.

I haven’t been able to see the bruising on my right hammy but today my wife informed me that I have a nice blue and purple bruise on the back of my right thigh a few inches higher than the middle of the thigh. Funny thing is my hammy is feeling better today than it has since the pull at the competition 9 days ago. I wonder how long the bruising has been there?
I’m considering which program to begin doing tomorrow. Most likely I will be doing a Westside type program and ramping up squatting poundages as my right hammy continues to heal.

Those hammies take a long time to heal. Way to push through the meet. Can’t imagine how you DLed, though.

Tonight lifting went well as I began a Westside type program.

T-Handle Swings:
100 lbs x 2 sets x 20 reps

ME Safety Bar Squats(Narrow Stance-inside shoulder width):
65 lbs(Bar) x 10
155 x 5
245 x 3
335 x 3
425 x 3

ME Front Squats(Zercher/Front Squat Harness-26 lbs)[Wide Stance]:
161 x 5
251 x 3
341 x 3

Zercher Squats-starting at pin at mid-thigh(Zercher/Front Squat Harness-Wide Stance):
161 x 5
251 x 5
341 x 5
431 lbs x 5 (Significant pulling at injured right hammy but tolerable)

Standing Crunches:
90 lbs x 3 sets x 10

Completely worn out at the end of a 45 minute lifting session. I forgot to do a farmer’s walk. First time I did any wide leg squatting and zercher squats since my hammy pull. The stress on my right hammy was evident yet I feel like the work is healing me.

Maybe it was an adhesion you had to tear through and it is just coming out now that you have broken it up… you squatted your way though it. See squatting more does fix everything…

Hammy is aching quite a bit this morning however I have good mobility and I’m moving fine. Maybe your right corrmhona.

That’s some great squatting GV. I’m sure the pain sucks, but having mobility is always good!

I once ended up with a nasty hamstring adhesion but the muscle wasn’t torn. I was sure it was, it was bruised up and was swollen, but it was near the beginning of throwing season so I decided to pretend nothing had happened. As long as I kept pushing it, it got stronger and had a better range of motion. I just needed to grind up the scab and life was good again.

Mine happened while picking sheep for my wife to shear, so lamer than your epic meet…I sure as hell wasn’t deadlifting after. There may, in fact, have been some whining in my case…and a sudden need for cold beer to wash down the ibuprofen.

When I have had a serious tear it always tightens up and gets worse if I declare it imaginary. That said…be careful and good luck, you know the drill.

I was mainly pissed off about the problem with my hammy and I didn’t do any wining but there was a lot of gnashing of the teeth and a good deal of growling. I’m beginning to believe corrmhona that you are right that I am dealing with a hamstring adhesion so I’m going to investigate this further.
Thanks for the props Wiex.

Tonight lifting went well.

T-Handle Swings:
100 lbs x 2 sets x 20 reps

ME Football Bar Bench:
33 lbs(Bar) x 20
123 x 8
173 x 3
213 x 3
233 x 3

ME Dead Stop Bench (Standard Bar) Pin Presses(Start at chest-full reset):
135 x 5
185 x 3
225 x 3

Strict Standing Overhead Presses:
135 x 2 sets x 3 reps
165 x 3 sets x 3 reps

Tricep Push Downs - Giant Set With - Bent Over Rows:
90 lbs x 3 x 12 -With- 225 lbs 3 sets x 6 reps

Standing Crunches:
90 lbs x 20 reps

Farmer’s Walk: 35 lbs dumbbells x 300 yards (No straps, no drops, no restarts)

Things moved with good intensity for about 50 minutes tonight. I think I will improve to heavier weights when I am not moving quite as fast as I did tonight. My rests between sets were only about one minute to a minute and a half for the most part so I think some fatigue was present.

Hey GV, what does the ME represent in front of the Dead Stop Bench and FB Bar Bench?

ME means max effort, whereas DE means dynamic effort. These terms are related to the Westside type lifting program I am doing.

Today, after work l was getting ready for a shower and my wife noticed that I had new deep purple bruising developed near the back of my knee and under on my right calf and over on the lower part of my hammy. I haven’t had any new pain in those areas but I recently I have started doing some light rolling with a LAX ball and roller in those areas. Could also be the bent-over rows from yesterday. I don’t know. Just another day in the recovery of my hammy.

That’s a lot of pressing in 50 minutes, I couldn’t do that much at anywhere near my maxes.

On another note, new bruising doesn’t sound good to me. That’s very similar to what happened to me with the bicep tear, some bruising and swelling when it happened, then it went away for a few days, then came back in a slightly different area.

I know you are more used to dealing with injuries than I am but I think it may be worth getting checked out to see if there is more going on with the hammy than just a strain.

Thanks GV. I’ve been meaning to read up on the Westside style of work.

Due to my recent situation, I’ve been reading up on leg strains and have noticed quite a bit about the bruising symptoms following some hammy pulls. Most all sites do recommend seeing a doctor. But as Dave would say, that’s all the mommy lecture I will give.

Here’s a quote from one of the sites that put in the most concise structure:
What are the symptoms of a pulled hamstring?
The symptoms of a pulled hamstring depend on the severity of the injury. The hamstring injury is usually sudden and painful. Other common symptoms include:

Bruising: Small tears within the muscle cause bleeding and subsequent bruising. The bruise begins in the back of the thigh, and as time passes the bruise will pass down below the knee and often into the foot.
Wiex-Thanks for the info. Maybe that’s what is happening the bruising is passing down to my lower leg and possibley foot.

Dave-Thanks. I don’t have enough pain to go to a Doctor. May be a bad decision but I guess I’ll live with it. Sure, there’s still some small pain but I’m not lacking mobility and strength is pretty good considering the situation. I will wait another week and watch progress before I decide to go to a Doctor. All I need right now is a Dr. to tell me to rest and put ice on it-that will just piss me off that I wasted time and money.

Tonight’s lifting went well.

T-Handle Swings:
100 lbs x 2 sets x 20 reps

DE Squats:
135 x 10
225 x 5
315 x 8 sets x 3 reps(1 minute rest btwn sets)

Front Squats:
135 x 2 x 5
225 x 3 x 5

Pin Deadlifts(Starting just below knee):
135 x 5
225 x 5
315 x 3 sets x 5 reps

Standing Crunches:
90 lbs x 20 reps

Good work that went quickly. My right hammy was stressed and pulled a little while doing the pin deads but not too much discomfort.
