i need some guidance from my fellow T-men. i’m a 33 year old male and i’ve been noticing my hair’s been thinning on top. i still have hair, of course, but when i come out of the shower or stand under a light, i see a lot of my scalp. i thought i could use Rogaine, but i read the back of the box and noticed that Rogaine only treats a certain type of balding pattern, which i don’t have. i’ve searched the T-mag site and forums, and i’ve come to the conclusion that Finasteride might be the answer. For those are using Finasteride, what have been the side effects? If i take Finasteride, and then discontinue its use, will i lose my hair again? Will i have to stop taking Mag-10, tribex or “M” while on or off Finasteride? Any answer is appreciated.
I know this isn’t the answer you want to hear, but I say deal with it. Accept it. The treatments that are out there have spotty results at best, and cost lots of money each month to keep whatever growth you may achieve.
I say this as someone who used to have that “70’s” kind of hair. Too thick, too long, and then I started losing it in college. It freaked me out, too, and I tried Rogaine ($60/month back then), but only got marginal results and didn’t want to keep paying the price.
So I dealt with it. Spiked what hair I did have on top and grew a tail, then finally said screw it and shaved all the shit off.
Take a look around. Bald heads are everywhere, and I don’t just mean guys with chrome-domes, but guys who shave their hair off because it’s the “in” thing. Low maintenance, too. Save on shampoo.
Look at 'Cake. Look at me. We can’t keep the girls away, dammit!
Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration…
Not to be a dick, and I know that this isn’t the answer that you wanted either, but I have a hard time believing that you really did a thorough search. All of the questions you’ve asked have been answered (usually by Bill Roberts, the Final Authority). Try reading a bit more, especially about the relationship between finasteride and 5-AR.
Shave it off!
Get proscar and cut it up into four pieces. Take one piece a day. It’s cheaper. I don’t honestly know how much it’s helped me, but it really isn’t expensive, and I haven’t had any side effects.
I agree with the other posters… Shave it! Or go really short (the major dad look). Embrace it. One question though (you don’t have to answer here, but answer for yourself), are you doing anything that can cause MPB? Like steroids? I hear that propecia is supposed to really help. But if all else fails, trim that bad boy down to a high and tight. I have all my hair and still keep it so short that I don’t ever have to worry about “fixing” my hair. My bro shaved his off, and couldn’t believe how positively women responded to him. He kept it that way so long, he didn’t know that his hair had begun to thin up top till just recently when he let it grow out for a while.
