Gym recommendation for the Northeast Dallas Suburbs

Hello,

I’ll be moving to the Plano/Garland/Rowlett area soon, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good gym (one where t-mag exercises are permitted and/or encouraged). I know that there are a lot of gyms that don’t allow deadlifting and olympic lifts.

Thanks.

Matt,

Wompa1 and I found a really good gym in the Carrolton area, actually it’s kinda fluff, but we go in a take over and do our deadlifting, powerlifting, etc. and no one says anything, in fact some of the trainers take after our training. I don’t know where exactly you’ll be but there are several in that area that you could check out.

Hey Matt, I live in the Carrolton/Plano area, and I work out at a Gold’s Gym in Carrolton. My partner (Agathos) and I go in and do whatever the hell we want to do, as far as workouts, and nobody has said anything to us yet. Other than the music being pansied out, it’s not that bad. Where abouts are you gonna be moving?

Agathos and Wompa1,

Wow, thanks for quick reply. It’s great to know that there will be other t-mag people nearby. In response to your questions, I’ll be living in Rowlett (close to Garland where the George tollroad ends), but I’ll be working in Plano, so anywhere in between works for me. I’ll definitely check out the Gold’s in Carrolton.

Thanks again,

Matt

That might be kind of a drive for you, especially with traffic. There are Balley’s and 24 Hr. Fitness all around, but I really don’t like their fees! Make sure you look around for small privately owned gyms in the neighborhood too, you would be surprised how many there are around.

The 24 hour fitness on Alma and Parker is good for what you’re looking for. Most people ignore the power racks and the lifting platforms. Deads and whatnot are okay there, nobody will tell you not to do them. Not so sure about how much fees are.

Keith,

Do they actually have lifting platforms at that particular facility? Also, anyone know if it is common for 24 hr. fitness centers to disallow lifts such as deadlifts, o-lifts, overhead lifting etc?

I’ve never known a 24hr. Fitness to not allow deadlifting or any other type of exercies we would be concerned with. You may have to just make room to do it (remove the bars from the power rack, take over a corner for yourself, etc. One good thing about them is that I have yet to find one w/out a power rack, you’d be surprised the number of fluff gyms that don’t have them.

They are a great chain, but I have to point out I have had countless friends have all kinds of problems with billing/fees/contracts/etc. that were difficult and time consuming to resolve and many of which were never resolved and that seems to be the general consensus, but I’m sure there are some members who have never had a problem just the same.

They have two lifting platforms total. One floor level by the power racks and one elevated near the dumbbells. However, due to the fact that hardly anybody uses them, it seems to be more than enough for myself. I’ve heard of a Powerhouse Gym in Plano also that I believe caters more to the power/strength trainers, but I have not checked it out. I’ve worked out at 24 hour for over 3 years now and not had any problems with my monthly dues at all.

There is a Gold’s Gym on the SE corner of Garland Road and Beltline. The last time I was in there it was packed pretty tight with equipment. It can get busy like any other gym, depending on the time of day, and the music was pretty weak when I was there. It also has an indoor pool, basketball court and plenty of cardio equipment. Also, there is a 24 Hour Fitness on the NW corner of Campbell and Plano Road. I haven’t checked that one out. Good luck and welcome to the Metroplex!

Any Renegades in the area? The reason I ask is I may soon be moving to the area myself.
