Grindovermatter's Offseason Thread

Looks like I’m late to the party but I’m in on this log. You looked shredded for the show (congrats) and it looks like you’re keeping lean in this offseason.

I was staying lean but now I’m definitely in bulk mode.

I’m accepting the fact that to nab a pro card some day that I need to grow a back and also chest and arms.

I’ve had the same realization about my physique.

Well I couldnt even believe the pump and then the soreness in my lats the next day after training with this new style. I’m hoping it’ll be what I need to get where I want to go.

Took some pics this weekend

Bodyweght is up to 181 to 182

Working especially hard on back and calves

Don’t get me wrong, the whole package is impressive but if pro cards were won on quads alone…

Have you been doing anything different for them?

Very, very impressive mate keep up the good work!

Quad frenquency is down to once a week. On the day we train quads we are focusing on glutes and Adductors as well. One movement we are trying is the revetse stance hack squat. Other than that I attribute the quad development to squatting like an oly lifter except I go to about 90 degrees. Another movement I feel is highly underated is close stance smith squats, where you put your feet far in front of your body!

Hey Grind, how are things going? I’m sure you’re killing your training and staying focused in your new career, post an update when you get a chance man

Not sure if I’m supposed to post the workouts but the giant set yesterday was
4 rounds of
Straight arm pulldowns x 20
Lat pulldowns 10- 12
Lat shrugs 12,- 15

All with 5 second eccentrics
What does your weekly split look like? Are you using any intra workout or post workout carb and amino drinks, or does Eric not really care for those? I have seen him on Facebook over the years. Dude has a pretty nice structure!
Day 1 chest
Day 2 lats
Day 3 quads and calves
Day 4 arms
Day 5 hams and calves
Day 6 chest and back
Day 7 calves…haha hr calf workout

We haven’t talked much about diet other Than the macros he gave me

All he told me was to take simple sugars pwo with whey…today I had corn pops with almond milk and whey.

I’ve kept MAG-10 out of the equation recently but may add it back In at some point
No shoulders in your split?

I stopped training shoulders for a while this offseason in attempt to help balance out my pec developement with them, this was actually a success, i had to re learn how to press to pretty hit my pecs, but i feel this strategy actually worked. My shoulders i would say respond quite well to the mountain dog methods, I am actually going to be going back to my old Chest/ shoulder day very soon and going to start hammering them again. I see in my physique they do look a little less prominent then how they used to be when i trained them hard.

Hey man, thanks for asking

Well i had a down period for about 14 days back in march when i had final exams for my paramedicine course. Paramedics in canada actually have a fairly high skill set these days, and most courses from start to finish are only 10 months (including 4 months of working on the ambulance) so they really jam pack all the material very fast (its like every week is exam week). If you fail one test, your basically screwed and since i had a whole bunch of money invested in the program i couldnt risk not getting through it, so i took about 10 days where i didnt count macros and trained for maybe 45 minutes a few times a week just to clear my mind.

That being said i passed! Im working on the ambulance as the final part of the program. These last few weeks have been a lot about trying to figure out how to do bodybuilding on this crazy rotating shift schedule. Luckily as of recent im newly single and live alone now and have a lot of time to myself when im not working.

Training updates-- unfortunately i had to stop working with eric due to lack of funds (500 dollars left on my student loan to keep me going till june…)

At this point i wanted a change of pace and adopted a sort of DUP routine where i had upper and lower workouts in different rep ranges, i gained some decent strength this way, but i kind of got carried away with the progressions and feel i need to slow down due to some nagging injuries. That being said im going back to a 6 day - Mountain dog type split, with a HUGE focus on bringing up my back (and calves). Im not sure exactly how this will look yet, but there will be two dedicated back days a week.

As far as bodyweight i beleive ive been hovering around 185 lbs now (not really keeping track), going by the mirror and making sure to not get too fat while trying to keep gaining muscle and strength.

Glad to see you back on the forums Grind! I hope you’ll keep updating your thread from time to time, congratulations on passing what sounds like the toughest part of your program! I’d love to hear any thoughts you might have in my contest thread. Your prep thread has been a big inspiration for me these last few weeks, gone through it a few times

sorry guys so few updates these days

i am now a 3dmj athlete.

goal is to get back on stage in either 2015 or 2016. With my so so off season this far competing in 2014 just isnt an option and most days younger natural guys dont do back to back contest seasons anymore!

Right now i have an off season plan under the guidance of Jeff alberts, tthey are very meticulous about logging so ive been tracking macros like im on a prep right now and taking a weight every morning , tracking all my numbers each workout, stuff ive never done before.

Oh yeah and i should also mention that i just recently graduated my paramedicine program, i now have to wait until september to right the national exam, which is great because it gives me a lot of down time until then, the last 10 months was one of the busiest grinds of my life.
so time to kick back, get on a normal sleep schedule and make some gains.

Congrats on everything dude! Glad to have you back updating!

Jeff alberts! couldnt of been happier to get him !

Does he just give you macros and then you get free reign to do with them what you will? Plan on using any intra workout nutrition?

gives you macros to start and instructions on how to raise or lower them depending on how your weekly average weigh in responds…

intra workout nutrition…lets talk about that one there for a second

to answer your question shortly , no i dont really plan on using any. I actually ordered two bottles of plazma to give it a shot. Although i liked it, i didn’t feel it was the factor making or breaking my progress. What i was missing was a well thought out training program, hitting macros everyday and being bang on with with my sleep (ok this was really tough with my schedule). Using intra workout nutrition definitely allows you to train longer with more intensity, however i kind of got lost in the world of volume training for a while. Once you commit to a fairly high volume training regime (like mountaindog training) it was hard for me to know when to stop, for example some days if i had time id train back with like 30 working sets, man my back felt pumped and bigger for the next few days, but then next time back day rolled around i could manage maybe 65 minutes to train so it was all over the place(Ok this is where actually hiring john meadows would help with proper periodization)

Now Lets step back for a minute and ask our selves why intra workout nutrition might be important-

A-It can allow you keep up more intensity during a long session (2 hour plus), because if you attempt long ass training sessions you will get depleted and tired eventually
B- It can be an easy way to get a bunch of carbs down if your stomach tends to get full very easily like mine does
C- some people argue that carbs during the workout can allow you to eat more carbs overall, store more carbs in the muscle, speed up recovery , and everyone has heard the idea that carbs taken in during the workout “cant” make you fat

In my mind both A and B could be valid reasons to take in intraworkout nutrition. Reason C to me, is not scientifically backed up enough for me to consider it valid yet. Perhaps time will tell, in the future though.

As far addressing reason A, the workouts Jeff has given me are definitely not marathon sessions (altthough they certainly dont lack volume either) as im gettting most of them done in about 75 minutes.

Also my funds are very limited now, so anything thats not essential is out of the question.
